I like the pop rivets because they clamp on both sides. Screws might not hold, but small bolts and nutes would work.

Reviving an old topic here as I realized I never followed up on this and saw when I went searching for the topic for someone else, it was incomplete.

here is what I did.... turned out nicely

Used some nice .25" thick rubber floor mat found at Pep Boys. Wanted it thick and stout enough to not flap in the wind. Cut that into desired shape and used rivets (3/16) to attach.
