ROTW-74fj40

Hey there, I'm 14 years old and have alway been into offroading and what not. Starting about october 2004, My father and I have been looking into Fj40's. We were mostly searching on ebay and a bit locally, after a long search we found the right one for us. This one was on ebay, It was different from every other cruiser seen on ebay. This cruiser was in peices. The PO before had fully dissasembled it, in order for it to get a full restoration. But unfortonatly he was a marine and was being deployed to Arizona . The PO had also dipped, blasted, and POR 15'D the frame, and rear axle. So SOME of the hard part was done. It arrived on March 21 2005 . The bad part about the car was that all the panels had been rusted out so we bought a used tub (see pictures) but other than that everything looks pretty good. Ever since then this has been a never ending project.

Enjoy the pictures

ebay picture

This is the new (to us) tub the we got

Another pic of the tub

Nice project! When do you expect to be driving it? how long have you been in assembly mode? A friend of mine is doing something similar, only his has been apart for years and is just now coming together.

You guys cleaned up the engine nice. What you might want to consider is buying an 81ish Distributor (See tech page on distributors) so you can have the electronic ignition. It would require changing the side panel for one with a dimple.

Do you have any more pictures of the panels being installed? Did you make the panels or buy them?

Great rig.... Keep up the good work!

How much have you spent so far? I'm very new to FJ's, almost a month now. And I have been pricing all the stuff I need/want, it gets a little overwheling. Just curious as to how much you have put out.
Also, like I said, very new to these trucks. The engine looks great, are they the original colors? I'd like to get mine looking like that...

Thank you. Someone needed to say it.
Max nice build up. It reminds me when I was 14 and my Dad gave me his 66 Fairlane, that was quite a buildup. Had lots of fun with my Dad.

Max,

Very nice job so far, you should be proud of your work. Is this something you are working on with your dad? Looks like you are hitting the details nicely as you go.

well, my dad and I are doing the best we can. we are trying to our hardest to not cut any corners and not take any shortcut. this is my first restoration of any car but his second. his first was a 59' porsche. we hope to have it running by the end of august. that is a good deadline because we wont be killing ourselves trying to make it

So its just you and your dad workig on this? Looks like a lot of work for just 2 people, is there anyone else helping? or anyone that you can ask questions of and get some reasonably good questions? And a new pic of the engine would be cool, kinda like this one.

unfortunautley, didnt pu in new pistons or get it bored. just cant afford that for now. the engine isnt even really put together, is just layed to gether so we could see what it looks like. were still not sure what size bearing and rings to put in, we bought a digital caliper and it says the bore is smaller than stock but it could be out of whack soo. my dad said he would wait toll i got home from canada till we figure out the bores and everything...

What color you plan on painting it? And are you going to restore the roof too or go with a soft top?

By the way did you see the new tubs in the vendor section
