clicking sound..from the rear ???

It seems I have developed this clicking sound as of late. I first noticed it when starting out in 1st. It would tend to go away about the time you would grab second and not reappear until the next first gear start out. It is now doing it audibly in second so I stuck my head underneath to see whats what. Dropped the skid plate, dropped the clutch inspection cover (TO bearing is on its last legs but thats another story), just to make sure the noise wasn't coming from anything like a worn engine mount letting the tcase tap against the skid plate or exhaust or the like. Laid underneath it, engine off, in 1st and rock the living shit out of it. Ujoints (albiet old) looked to be fine, yoke looked ok too. So up she went in the ass end and I tried to get the sound to come back using the brakes to simulate take offs. I could get it to make the clicking noise occaisinally, and it sounded as if it was coming from inside the pumpkin (wifie pumping brakes and me with stethoscope at this point)...So, I pulled the diff cover off...oil was in good shape (less than 2k on it), no metal shavings, everthing looks good. So any ideas where/what is causing my clicking on 1st and 2nd gear normal accelaration ? I am think about replacing the ujoints just because they are aged and seeing if that cures it...

rear ujoints or the driveline splines, might want to lube the driveline 1st to see if it goes away

I was able to stick my head back under it and no... no rocks, no locker tis original stuff, ujoints and dshaft all lubed and in good shape...(I did pull the dshaft as two new ujoints are on the way ...just because). The only thing I could see/feel was my pinion shaft and spacer has some slop. So, I pulled the pinion shaft and spacer and damn it appears to have quite a bit of longitudnal slop back and forth....I'm thinking this flopping back and forth along the long axis is what is giving me my click..click... click. Opinions.....

When it is installed it is within tolerance in association with the axle gears...but I can push it top and bottom and it'll click. For example when installed and the pinion and spacer are about 45 degree from horizontal, I can push the spacer with my finger upward and I get a click and then in about one or two seconds after I release it, it'll gravity drop and make another click when it rests back down on the pinion shaft. Another way to think of it is....the tolerance between the pinion shaft and the spacer is like a 1/2" diameter rod inside a 3/4" inside diameter pipe....sloppy.

I just installed put a new rear, pinion and ring w/ an arb and was having noises also thought it was the new pinion I swore it was coming from the rear end. It turned out to be the u-joint. When I dropped the shaft the joint was definitely binding.

The final inspection of all the bits...worn pinion shaft, worn spacer ...and worn spider gears and spacers. Solution...for roughly the same OK similar cost of all the above, I ordered an Aussie locker. It'll replace everything thats worn except I'll need the new pinion shaft Thats one way to justify to the Mrs that I needed an Aussie now

I had a similar symptom on my 55 with Detroit locker. I was assuming it was gonna be something expensive. On closer inspection it was the the u-joints. Pretty cheap and not that hard to replace as it turned out. I had never done this job before but it worked for me. Of course your mileage may vary or your problem may be different. But its worth checking the cheap stuff first.
