My 40 is leaking from everywhere. The rear diff is leaking, I removed the drive shaft and I can't get the pinion nut off to save my life. It was staked, I straightened it out and tried everything. I sprayed it with multi-purpose lube, used a LONG cheater bar, impact wrench everything. I just run the tires up over the 4x4 I used to chock the tires. How do I remove this?

My transfer case is also leaking. It's leaking form the expansion plug. Does anyone know how to fix that, short of taking it out and rebuilding it?

To top it off I'm leaking water and oil from the sbc 350... that's another post.

You bolt a 3 foot piece of angle iron to the pinion flange to keep it from turning while you lean on that cheater bar. It you really want to cheat, grind the staked part of the nut down to make it easier to turn.

If the expansion plug is the one covering the idler gear shaft, you need to remove the transfer case to get it out. You could try tapping on it so get it to seal a little better, but you are better off replacing it.

Apply some heat to the pinion nut..........(torch)....... then dog on it with the impact..........


Dope-up that expansion plug with JB Weld.......drain down the oil and clean the area first......
