how to hook up petronix?

so a friend gave me a dizzy with a petronix conversion done to it. i am unsure as to where to hook up the wires.
i assume the red one goes to the red that goes to the points. does the black go to ground?
also do i still need the balast resistor?
thanks for reading.

I installed mine without the resistor, but I am not sure if it is needed,

and you are right, Vick does suck.

If the ignition system is equipped with a ballast resistor, do not remove it......

Yes, but only if you don't have a ballast resistor. The resistor is about 1x 1 x 2 inches and is usually mounted in the vicinity of the coil (unless you have a '79 and up model). You attach the power lead for the Pert ignitor to the large black wire with yellow stripe. Ballast resistor types also have a small black wire with yellow stripe.

I had to advance the distributor some to get it to start when I installed the pertronix. Seems to run best with 10-15 deg advance. Also, if you are also running the Pertonix flame thrower coil as well, you do not need the ballast resistor (this is how mine is set up).

For finding vacuum leaks I did 3lbs of air and a soapy water spray. If ya leave the carb on you'll have to block off the intake and duct tape should work for that. BUT! if your rig was running before the dizzy swap then I'd be looking at the dizzy and worry about those leaks later. Did you insert the dizzy in the right position and do you get any spark at all out of it. I like using those cheapo light flashing thingys that plug inline with a spark plug wire. Crank it over and it should flash if you're dizzy's working. They also work good for setting the timing berfore starting. I've been using the Pertronix for bout 9 years now. I had the Igniter 1 (black) and the coil that came with it required a resistor. I just put in the Igniter 2 (red) with the Pertronix Flamethrower 2 coil and no resitor is required. Like Bsilva I run at about 15deg

You probably need to ajdust the timing. Either static time it or turn the distributor while someone else is cranking it.
