pinion ?

my question is ...is there a size difference between early and late model pinions or are all pinions the same size through the years with the only difference being the coarse to fine spline change ?and can I run the early 40 R&P In my 60 series axles?

The diffs are all interchangeable, in the pinion arena you have coarse spline/fine spline at the flange and crush sleeve or shims for the pinion preload. I would stay away from the coarse pinion if possible, and would use the shims vs. crush sleeve. Sorry I don't remember the years for spacers/sleeves.

Hi All:

Nope, no size difference.

The major fitting issue with installing the old coarse-spline (pre-1978) 4.11 ratio R&P in a 60 Series is the pinion flange bolt pattern. The drive shaft bolt pattern on the 60 Series is wider, IIRC, than the one present on coarse-spline 40 Series diffs.

If you want 4.11 diffs in your FJ60 the third members from a FJ62 would be the best swap for you. Or, get a set of new 4.11 R&P gears. These are all fine-spline, and will work with your stock pinion flanges.

Good luck!

Alan
