Finally got a 40!

I've always loved the FJ40's and I finally found one for sale in my area(Alaska) that was a decent price and in decent shape. Its an 81 with a 2F, header, cam, and intake installed. SOA with 35's, FJ60 powersteering, frame boxed and POR 15 coated, 4.11 gears, 4-speed, WARN winch. The body is really solid but not perfect. it runs good, needs a little tuning. I wanted to check the transmission fluid level. is the standard for re-filling the tranny to the right level just adding gear oil through the fill plug hole until the gear oil starts to ooze out?. I have a million more questions, but I will post up pics first of my new rig and also spend about 2 days just reading all I can from this site.

first off welcome to Mud (official welcome) yes fill it till it starts to drain out the fill hole. but it might be a good idea to drain all the old out and fill it with fresh. plus you can look to see if there is any chunks of metal or particals in the fluid to get an idea of condition of the tranny. and check if the transfer case is low on fluid also. maybe the seal has gone out between the two. the transfer case will pump its gear oil into the tranny. so if you pull the fill plug on the tranny and fluid comes out (over filled) your seal is gone and you need a new one or you can run a hose between the two so as it fills it drains back to the transfer case. i hope all this makes sence, if not ask.

oh and yeah post some pics

Welcome and look forward to some pictures
DO NOT I repeat DO NOT spend any time reading this site though, unless you plan to make it a full time job. It gets addicting real quick and the posts are non stop. And with searching, FAQ, the build threads, a couple of days is not enough. You will find so much information, and pictures, and ideas you cannot stop.

don't use a hypoid gear oil , it etches anything aluminum or brass in the tranny .

hey

I live in Chugiak, AK, just outside of Anchorage. Yes this site is addicting for sure, but its invaluable to someone who owns one of these trucks. I'm trying right now to track down a rear driveline vibration. Mostly when accelerating or when ya let of the gas. Acting like a U-joint, but they arn't really bad. But there is some lateral slop in the slip yoke. in other words you can grab the rear drive line and push up and down and there is a small bit of play where the splines are. I torqued the rear pinion nut and it helped, but not completely. With the SOA would a double cardigan style rear drive shaft be good to help with the angles of the driveline?. or would putting a shim in the rear to tip the pinion a bit be better?.

Check if your drive shaft is in phase. Google it or search this site for what that means, something I learned here even though never had the problem. U joints need to be lined up or you can get vibration like you are talking about. Just a thought

Now you must pay us with pictures!! Advice is not free here, some of us are very childish and do not like lots of words and no pictures, we like our reading to be mostly if not all pictures.
