Water Temp gauge ?

OK, I finally got the gauges installed and set back in the dash. Fired up the cruiser and let her run for about fifteen to twenty minutes. I didn't get any movement from the temp gauge at all so I'm wondering if

1) I let it run long enough
2) The damned sending unit wire came off the back
3) The gauge is broken

I'm hoping it's #1 but I kinda doubt it. I just hate taking the thing out again. It wasn't that hard really, just putting the speedo cable on was a huge pita...

Idea's?

My 77 2F only takes about 5mins to warm up and register the temp. For some reason it read's backwards, but still, only ~5mins.......

ground the lead to the sender and see if the gauge moves up scale, if it does, it would be a bad sender (assuming the engine is warmed up)
