Stupid nuts and bolts question for body

I have looked at posts and the nuts and bolts FAQ and have a few questions.

Is there a difference between M6 and 6mm? When I go to Bolt Depot - Nuts and Bolts, Screws and Fasteners online where I am planning on ordering them from I only see 6mm etc. Also any better place to order what is recommended on the FAQ list.

I am looking to bolt hood, fenders, skirts, bib, windshield etc back on a 1962 fj40. I want to re assemble the body parts before I tow it the 800 miles home on a uhaul trailer. Will metric bolts from one of these online places work, or will I have problems with the head not being the JIS automotive one where the hex head is smaller then normal.

And are these parts normally assembled with hex head bolts and nuts, or do some take something special. I have never taken a 40 apart, but I will now have two of them that came already apart.

Thanks

An M6 bolt/screw has a 6mm OD metric thread.

So a 6mm bolt with a metric thread can also be called an M6 bolt.

A common 6mm bolt designation would be "M6 x 20" meaning:
  • 6mm OD shank/thread
  • standard metric thread for that size, and
  • 20mm long (excluding the head in this dimension)

A hood is really a bonnet. A fender is really a guard. A windshield is really a windscreen. A zerk is really a nipple. A tire is really a tyre...........

Ther is also thread pitch to consider, but the M6 body fasteners on the Cruiser are all the same pitch. I think it's 1.25 but don't quote me on that. Pitch in metric threads is the distance (in millimeters) between two threads.

No they will probably not be JIS heads (12mm) they will likely be 13mm. Pretty sure nuts/washers will be separate.

Specter Off Road sells bolts in yellow cad plating with lock & flat washers but they are cheap low carbon steel, too soft in my opinion.

Going to get them from bolt depot, they have stainless and also 10.9 grade for automotive. SOR sells small kits. I am going to go with that is listed on the FAQ for quantity, size, pitch etc. Likely will go with 10.9, I hate stainless, if you forget to but the special coating on them they can be stuck as soon as you put them in. I figure if the original lasted over 40 years another set will go another 40.

Check with DAVEWORK here on IH8MUD... the nuts, bolts, and washers that I have gotten so far have been great, separately packaged (makes it easy even for me to find what I am needing)...
