NON FJ40 carb question. But Asian Toyota carb.

Working on a '74 Corona and the 2'd will not open up. Where does it pull vacuum from? I tore it apart and everything is good. I am at a loss.

4M 2.6 6cyl DOC

The mid '70s Chilton is useless for the carb.

The vaccum to operate the secondary probably comes from an internal port that is connected to the manifold vacuum at the base of the carb if it is like other Toyota carbs of the same vintage.

The secondary only opens up when there is a high load on the engine, like wide open trhottle going up hill in high gear. You can check it by putting a paper clip on the actuator rod so that it is touching the actuator case. Take it for a spin under high load and check to see if the clip has moved down the rod by about 3/4 inch.

Does it look like this one?

I've torn my carb apart a hundred times, vacuum tested the passages individually, tested the diaphragm, even tried connect a vaccum pump directly to both carb barrel openings, and came to the conclusion that the vacuum secondary is a myth. Using the paperclip test, it just never opens, but I can still hit 75 on the highway without it, so I dont' bother.

Actually, I have a second carb I'm going to install one of these days just to see if that there is a difference
