First drive after resto

Started April 2006 and drove it for the first time today! All I have to say is wow! Just wanted to share some pics from today of my experience.

Started as a 1969 Fj40 with an old Chevy 350. It did run but did not stop or turn very well.

What started as some brake work turned into an entire restoration with some enhancements.

It now has a new Chevy 5.3 drive by wire engine. A Dodge NV4500 HD transmission, Stock 3 speed tcase (Going to go to Orion soon after driving it) 1997 Fj80 axles (4wheel discs). XRC seats, Mastercraft in the rear, EZWire 21 fuse, with Shark guages. Thanks to several here with the Advanced Adapter order and general help! It drives straight and goes a banchee!

Enjoy a few pics. I can answer most questions now for those doing similar swaps.

I also have a lot of the full rebuild on my site FJ40 Restoration

Nice going!

I can't imagine how you got that Vortec and all it's electronics to work with that manual tranny. (I assume it is a manual, 'cause I see the clutch master in there.)

Sweet ride, man!

Putting the 5 speed in wasn't too bad with the manual adapter from Advanced Adapters. Lots of measuring before putting it all together. The 5.3 never came with a manual, so it is a little tricky. Spent a lot of time adjusting it to disengage when pusing in the clutch.

I get overly detailed, but spent 3 months going through the stock wire harness to eliminate extra wires. If you combine all the injectors and coil wires, you can start it with just 4 or so wires.

No windows in it yet.

on the vortec, what all had to be done to get it to idle down correctly with manual?

The wheels are a 17". The tires are off my 4runner and are a 285 which makes the wheels look larger. I plan to go to 35's when these tires are worn. I went with Pollux Orange. PPG has a paint code for this color. I can provide it if needed.

ohhhh i was thinking those were 35's and 20's...

with the 35's on there the 17's will look just fine.

I agree. I am not into huge wheels. It looks sort of goofy with the smaller tires. I think it almost looks like an RC in the one pic

Excellent Job! Just curious I noticed you used the BTB Steering column mount in the inside of the engine bay, do you have one in the inside th cab as well? If you could snap a photo of inside the cab that would be a big help to me. Also what seat frame are you using?

Thanks Dunebeigewa

Interesting conglomeration of parts from different automobile manufacturers. Sure wish there was more representation from the Toyota department though...then again, I am somewhat of purist.

Great rig! I decided to keep the 4L60E in mine, but still wish I had gone with the NV4500 like you. I've even been looking for an Orange paint, too. I was going to do smooth Durabak but decided against it when I found out they were stopping production on the Orange, and I wouldn't be able to get any in the future.

I'd like to see some pics of your interior, too! Also, what manifolds/headers did you use to stay off the frame?

Thanks,

Air Cleaner Question

Good day, I'm also in the middle of a 5.3 restoration. May I ask what you used for the air cleaner and its connection to the engine. Your setup is exactly what I need.

Thanks
Thad

Thumbs up NICE!

That's a very nice looking rig! I have a lot of admiration for you guys who are willing to go to the work of making different things from different manufacturers all work together and work together well. A beautiful, functional looking rig. Hope you enjoy it for many years!
