Home Brewed U-bolt Flip.
Hi All:
Been working on a home-brewed u-bolt flip for my SUA FJ40.
Here is a pic of a "mock-up" done on a spare rear axle tube. I'm using those GM P/U u-bolt plates.
The only reasons I can think of to have a bottom plate under the leaf spring is to protect the spring center bolt and to align the u-bolts under the spring.
Any opinions or comments?
Thanks!
Alan

I think that bottom plate is important and keeps the spring pin aligned, and keeps the u-bolt s from spreading. Also recesses the u-bolts What is your top plate? Looks like a Chevy piece.

X2 on what is that top piece. Do you have have year and model we can all go out and find? Also would agree w/ the thought on the bottom plate (or lack thereof...) Seems like the lower plate would be e z to fab. I like it. Good work!

he could easily take a peice of steel and cut 2 slots for the u bolts to keep them from spreading tho i dont think that would be much of a problem.
If you flipped the center pin to where it was into the little bottom mount seems like that would hold it in place just fine.
looks good. i dont really see any issues as long as you can hold the axle from shifting on the springs.

Hi All:
Look in this thread for the part numbers of the upper u-bolt plates (I'm using junkyard versions.)

Nice! I think you'll be ok without the bottom plate...but I have a suspicion that it will help with centering the leaf spring when you hit something hard. Also, a bottom plate may act as a "ramp" on rocks etc so they slide right down the spring instead of possibly stopping at the u-bolt.

Here's what I did with mine, the top bracket is from a toyota pickup, I built the bottom plate from spare steel. I ended up ditching this design when I had to put in 12* shims and I couldn't find u-bolts long enough. I'll go back to it when I find the u-bolts I need.

I have the same set-up. I have been running them for a couple of years now w/no issues.
X2 on the bottom plate will keep your center pin from getting buggered up and will keep the U-bolts in place as they get dragged over rocks n stuff.
Keep in mind this MOD may be better suited for aftermarket springs since they are usually not as wide as stock 40 springs.
Looks great!.. keep up the good work

Wow! Welcome to 1997 Yeah you will need the bottom plate as your u-bolts will spread out & your center pin will egg the leafs.

Hey Alan,
You can buy a couple chunks of steel and build your own bottom plates.
