Which shocks to get?

Hey all,

I'm a first-time 40 owner as of three weeks ago, and i must've hit some bad potholes on my 8 hr trip from Minneapolis to Chicago with the 40 because the shocks are now shooting fluid onto the underside of the hood! I am assuming it's the shocks, I don't know what else it could be.

So now i'm looking for replacement shocks. I will be using this as my daily driver, but I would also periodically like to wheel it. I'm looking for something on the cheap end (although not necessarily the cheapest). Any suggestions?

I dont' know much about shocks. I built a dune buggy this summer with some friends, but I don't know how much of the shock technology transfers over to a full size truck.

Thanks!!

Edin

Hi All:

Stock suspension on this FJ40? If so, OE Toyota shocks aren't too expensive.

Look here on MUD for a supporting that sells factory Toyota parts.

Good luck!

Alan

Welcome. Let's see some photos!
Shooting oil does not sound like shock problems.

Oh forgot to mention, I don't know what inch lift it has, but here are some pictures...

Pictures by edin351 - Photobucket

Most of the pictures on there are of leaks... people on the Chicago forum were helping me out with those. Are pictures enough info to guesstimate a lift? It has 35" tires.

Thanks

The reason I thought it was a shock problem was because the splatter spots were right above the two shocks... idk, maybe not. I'm not too good with this kind of stuff. I'm 17 yrs old and I bought this car because i love the way it looks and I think it's about time I learn something about cars.

Nice rig. It doesn't appear to have lift springs. It looks like stock springs SOA (spring over axle) with a shackle reversal. You've picked a great rig to learn to wrench on. Come back here with any questions you have and people will be happy to help you. Be sure to check the FAQs before you post up questions or you'll get flamed pretty hard.

Like Freak said - your rig is SOA, and appears to have a SM465, Hysteer, and several other mods. Looks like it is really set up for some wheeling! I run Bilstein 5125 series shocks - 14" travel in the front, 12" in the rear. They run about $150/pair, but are worth it!

Best of luck and keep the questions coming, this is where I learned most everything I know about LCs, and cars in general.
