I need your help... Engine no go
I just rebuilt my engine (2F) last week. Everything has been great (eventhough I haven't really driven it yet ) up until Sunday. I drove the truck for the first time around the block to double check things. Ran great, no problems or leaks.
I parked the truck in my driveway, jumped into my dailydriver and went to the parts store to get a header collector gasket. Came home (20 min. later) and the truck won't start . It stumbles, farts, backfires and stalls. Now mind you, I was just drove it 20 min. earlier. I have checked the timing, fuel, compression test and rotated the crank watching the valve train and dizzy making sure everything moves together. Everything is dead on including the mark on the flywheel when #1 is on valve overlap and the dizzy is at #1 in the cap.
any help would be great..... i am ready to throw a roadflare in her and walk away
Also, to save questions... the coil tests good, the dizzy tests good and I have great spark. Also pulled the fuel line and cranked the motor and I have great fuel pressure........

Where is the fuel level in the sight glass? Will it run if your pour fuel down the carb throat? What kind of distributor and ignition system are you running?

no fuel window..... weber carb. Ignition is a Mallory unilite distributer. I checked the ignition modual and it tests fine. I even swaped the dizzy for a known good HEI just to rule out ignition. Even with the other distributer it does the same thing..... Also, the carb shoots flame out of it when cranking..... I double checked timing to see if it was 180 off and that wasn't it....

If you are sure the timing is correct take off the valve cover and make sure all the valves are moving. Flame out the carb means detonation while an intake valve is open. My bet is still timing way off, if not a valve problem.

I have pulled the valve cover and rotated the crank watching the valves..... I stated that in the 1st post. I am starting to wonder if the timimg gear on the cam (the dizzy drive gear) moved somehow or something.....

It needs air, fuel and a spark on time. Since it did run and it sparks, that leaves fuel/air. Try pouring a table spoon of gas in the carb ant see if it runs for at least a few seconds. Check the simple stuff first.

You've got to start with basics. Do you have spark? Do you have fuel?
Then, do you have spark at the right time?
Then are the valves opening and closing at the right time?
Since you have a spark and it ran at one time, I would start with some starting fluid or fuel down the carb. Do you get ignition?
If you test this and it does not try to start, I would first suspect the dizzy timing.

ok, here is more info..... I have spark and lots of it. I have about an 1 inch spark coming from the coil wire to ground. The truck does fire, stumble, fart and die. Will not idle. I have removed the fuel line from the carb and cranked it to check fuel. It has lots of fuel.....
I would assume that the valves are opening and closeing properly being that I did a compression test and the passed.

gas down her throat is the only thing I haven't tried.....
I would be afraid to being that it is backfireing so bad

If you are skeered, then pump the throttle about 6 times and check to see if there is gas squirting into the throttle body. You would have to take off the air cleaner though....
