slave cylinder always going bad?

I have a 1972 FJ40 3 speed manual. Everytime I go wheeling my slave cylinder goes out. I believe the cylinder is the orginal, maybe not, but 3 times in one summer. What should I do?

are you rebuilding it each time...or buying new one each time?

Since replacement cylinders (and even rebuild kits) for the early slave cylinder are difficult to come by from local parts stores, there is a good chance it was replaced with a later slave. It all bolts up and works fine, but the bore is smaller. Sombine a smaller bore with the big-bore master cylinder, and you have the potential to over-extend the slave and blow out the seal.

I would check that before you get any further with replacing or rebuilding parts.

Buy oem from toyota. Also have on hand a master if it goes. My 1977 slave went out on the trail in '03 and I put a new oem mc and slave in it. As I recall, they weren't all that much $. Done deal, no problems since. I always carry a spare new oem slave just in case, but haven't had to use it.

If you find you have the original MC & Slave cylinder, it may be a good idea to hone the cylinder for a few minutes with brake fluid before reassembly. When i started doing this, I found out my slave cylinder seems to last longer.

The title says 1972 but the stamp on the vehicle says 1971. Which year should I go by?

Ok I have an oem from toyota, now my question is; Is it ok to use brake fluid instead of clutch fluid? Is there a difference?

I've only used brake fluid......not familiar with clutch fluid? The real experts will chime in shortly.

just bleed it every few years or year , keep moisture out of it . #1 killer of hydraulic clutch and brake components is water in the fluid .

i just use dot 3 (new bottle), never had a problem before .

there is specific clutch fluid for some things , my street bike has it even though i just use dot 4 instead .
