How much for a windshield replacement for a 40?

I have a cracked windshield on my 73 40. Just wondering how much it usually costs to replace.

Mine was something like $160 or $180 about a year and a half ago to have them cut the glass and install it at a local glass shop.

For a flat pane of glass? I had a windshield for a 88 Jetta replaced 8 years ago which is a formed piece of safety glass ordered and installed for $88. Was it the fact that they had to cut the glass?

Can anyone give me a name of a business that will do the cut and install?

I am having a tough time finding one here.

Jack

do they need a windshield to copy when they cut it or can they just take measurements off of the gasket/windshield frame?

I am sure that they can make the windshield from the frame. I was told by a place I just called a few minutes ago that they can not cut laminate glass and as a result they could not make a windshield if the car was going to be driven. Does anyone have a different take on this?

They just didn't want to. Stop stomping your feet and find someone else.

Listen, Charlotte is a big town. Certainly you should be able to find whatever it is that you need.

Pick up the Yellow pages, look under automotive glass and let the fingers do the walking. Tell them it is for a Jeep so you won't confuse them. Plan on driving it there or taking them WS frame to them so they can actually see what it is they are quoting. Repeat.

Jeff at Champion Toyota in Houston will ship OE glass at a fair price. 800-327-2087

I did talk to another company that said that the windshield could be cut for around $100-150.

Find a shop that does custom work for hot rods - not the "order the glass from the supplier and pay a high school kid $8 an hour to install it" place. I pay about $75 for a custom cut with installation. They can cut it from the frame dimensions, but it's easier to just copy the old glass, even if it's broken.

This is a sore topic. Rant to follow--

I bought a new Toyota windshield from the local stealership in mid 2007. List price was under $80, I paid the jobber price of $54 and installed it myself.

Less than two years later, July 2009, I took a hit from a big rock and thought hell, for $54 I'll just replace it. Called the same dealership, and was advised that there had been a "slight price increase." New list price is $285.07, new jobber price is $212. Slight increase my a$$. That's +369%.

So last week I took the 40 to Binswanger Glass for a ding repair, courtesy of my insurance. While waiting for the epoxy to cure I was bitching to the manager about Toyota's new windshield price. He told me that PPG manufactures replacement glass for Toyota, and that the "real cost" of an FJ40 windshield, badged as PPG rather than Toyota, is around $30. His price is under $50.

I'd suggest that you buy the glass and install yourself. It isn't difficult. Here's a MUD thread that walks you through the rope and soap procedure.

so Lee, the most important information you left out is WHERE CAN I BUY THIS $30-50 Toyota-repro glass by PPG?

Hey Dave, I guess that critical bit of information got lost in the rant. I was at Binswanger Glass in Austin. They're all over the south and it appears that there are locations in Alabama.

Binswanger

To clarify, according to the shop manager, the production cost of a flat, tinted FJ40 windshield is "no more than $30." The invoice price to a glass shop is under $50, but that isn't the price to the consumer. They have multiple pricing levels depending on which insurance company they're dealing with, or which body shop, or for direct sales to non-insured customers. I was told that I could buy a late model FJ40 windshield for around $100, or roughly twice the retailer's invoice price. That's still ~$20 more than the $75-80 that other posters report paying for custom cut windshields, which sounds like the best deal available.
