Will 33x10.50r15's fit on a stock 78FJ40? Cant find the answer

I am sure this has been asked a thousand times but will they fit? I am about to order some ATKO's from discount tire and want to know if they will fit with out a lift.

Thanks and sorry for the possible repost

Thanks, I have done more searching and have found that most people have at least a 2.5 inch lift. I'm gonna try to mount them in stock form and think about lift shakles later.

I put my 33x10.50's on my stock rims w/o a lift and I couldn't even get out of the parking lot. You must have at least 2.5" but 4" is not problem. Just my experience.

72 FJ40 with a shackle lift fits 33x10.50x15" BFG's just fine.

Only real rubbage is on the center steering link

Ok, are there more people who have put 33x10.50's on a stock FJ40 suspension? I don't want to be at the tire shop getting my tires mounted just to pay to have them dismoutned and my old ones put back on. That would be expensive and really ruin a day.

You will rub if you flex at all. And shackle lifts (on the front springs) are not cool unless you shim your front axle back to fix your caster angle. Just put 31x10.50s on it, that's what I have and they've taken me a LOT of places (see my bio in my sig line). Even mine rub the rear inner fender well at full flex, and my rear fenders are trimmed a tad too. Some people have experienced that if you don't have trimmed rear fenders you will rub 31x10.50 on stock springs. I would not do 33x10.50 without at least a 2 1/2" lift, it's just not cool in my book to have a big tire you can't really do anything with. It (TO MY EYE) kinda looks funny to me too, the tire is (in my opinion) too big for the way the suspension is set up. Do your suspension first then get bigger tires. If you're trying to get the $$ to do the suspension, get some used smaller tires for now to replace your current set and do it right and do it once.

Ah man, I am really wanting the 33's but I don't want to get over my head and have to buy a suspension lift. Plus the 31's are surely alot cheaper.

Some people like the look of the 33x9.50, but I think it looks too big for the fender well on a stock height truck (if you do a search for pictures with 33 inch tires etc. you will find a lot of threads with pictures - "show us your lifts" is a thread I think with pictures). Plus I don't get why you would want a tire size that you can't even get full use out of. The difference between a 31" and 33" tire is, in some ways, not really all that much. And like I said, I've gone a LOT of places on my 31s.

I get what you are saying but I want the tallest tire I can fit since I am buying all 4 new. The difference in a 31 and 33 is $12 per tire so if I can fit 33's I want to do that. But if all I can fit is 31's then I will do that. I don't want to have a problem with the 33's but I don't want to have a bunch of space left over with the 31's (i.e. I don't want my cruiser to look like it does now with the 235's)

So you have put a set of 33x10.50x15" BFG's on a stock cruiser?

Just about any tire will rub the inner fenderwell. It is not a big deal.

It looks really good. Stupid is in the eye of the beholder. I love minimal lifts and bigger tires. It is a much more stable ride.

If you are going to wheel your cruiser, cut fenders are pretty much mandatory anyway..

For a mostly street cruiser, they work great..

No I haven't. I went through the debate though, and looked at the pictures, read through the posts, and came to the conclusion above, and wanted to share that I've been happy with it. It's my opinion. I wanted to challenge his thoughts of what he wanted to do with the truck. If he likes the look and understands that rubbing will occur in certain instances, then fine. Yes, they fit if your truck is sitting flat on the street. To each their own.

I shouldn't have said stupid. Stupid is not a good word. And you're right it's in the eye of the beholder. There are lots of pictures on this website so that he can behold with his own eyes probably the exact setup he wants (including tires and rims), and then pm the owner and ask for feedback.

With stock springs, non cut rear sides, 31x10.5 bent the fenderwell out on my 78 when the rear springs compressed. Kind of a unwanted fender flair.

I definetely don't want to bend out my fenders. I am starting to think the 31's are the way to go. Ok, AT KO's or the new BFG M/t's. I don't know if they are much different in price but those AT KO's last forever and look great.

31's will bend out the fender well if you're using wider-than-stock-wheels. The stock 5.5 inch rims won't, but 8 inchers will. 31's will rub at full turn unless you do a shackle lift or lift springs. If your mind is set on 33's, go 33x9.5x15. Lots of guys love 'em....do a search and you'll see lots of pics.

Get the 33x 9.5 Bfg's ....... Pizza cutters. They fit inside the rear fender well. Mine only make contact up front on a really tight turn.I like the look.

I am getting the 31x10.50's. I just went to a local offroad shop and the guy gave me a hard time for not using him. His price is $150 ($148 at Discount tire and the rebate) his mount and balance $50 (Walmart $8.50). It is a lot cheaper to do it the other way, sorry the guy just kinda ticked me off.

Thanks again for helping my decision. Now I have to decide whether or not to buy a brand new spare or try and find a used one. Used one's are hard to find sometimes but not sure if it is work an additional $149 to sit on the back. But I'm sure it would kinda round off the new tires though.

I have 32-1150s on my stock 79 fj40. The only thing is I had them on some black wagon wheels. I haven't tried on the stock rims yet. I got some lift shackles from coolcruiser.com and I got a set of shims with them. Now with 2.5 lift shackles I have 33-12.50-a5s BFG MudTerrain KM on it. I haven't flexed it hard since the new tires but if it rubs I don't really care as long as it doesn't cut the tire

I wouldn't go wider than 10.5's on a stock 5.5 inch rim....some will even discourage that, but 11.5's on a stocker would be pushing it, in my opinion.

alabamacruiser7 - are you running stock rims or something else?

I'm running 31x10.5x15's on my stock rims (no lift) right now and love them......when time to change them, though, I'll be going to 33x9.5 pizza cutters on the stock rims....probably do a small lift at that time.....FWIW. My avatar pic is with the 31's on 8 inch wagon wheels. It had a small Rancho lift and only rubbed at full lock.

Yes, I have stock wheels with hubcaps. Do you have some pics you could post up so I can see what a stock 40 looks like with 31's. I have been all over this site and don't know what I have seen and havn't.

Don't think I have any in my computer, but I'll try to get some pics soon and will post them here for you. Just do a search for 31x10.5x15 and it should come up with a TON of pics for you.

Post #25 looks about right.....http://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series...ght=31x10.5x15

Mine has about 1" cut off the rear fender, and these are Goodyear MT/Rs, not BFG A/Ts...31x10.50 on 15x8 white wagon wheels. The other truck has a 4" lift with 34x10.50 LTB Super Swampers.

subzali your cruiser looks good. I am going with the 31's. That is what you have correct? A 31x10.50r15 MTR on a stock suspension. I think your tires stick out a little farther than mine with because of the 8 inch wheels since I have the stock ones.

Yes I have 31" x 10.50 Goodyear MT/Rs on 8" wide wheels. Just be careful, like CruiserStuff said, about the rear fender if you end up flexing it. Mine is cut already so I don't have any problems there (it is also loaded with camping gear in that picture). I also don't know what the 5.5" wide rim you have will do to the tire profile. Like some of the above said, the 33x9.50 has been known to work and fit inside the wheel wells on stock height trucks, and only rub when turning. So if you still want the 33 you might look into that, and I am pretty sure BFG makes the AT in that size. There are always variables with trucks this old, but try to find one that's close to what you're looking for and give it a try and post up pictures of yours once you are done. I almost snagged some 31x10.50 BFG A/Ts for my stock steelies, but missed them by a few minutes, so unfortunately I don't have a picture that's any closer to the setup you're looking at.

I don't think anyone makes the 9.50 anymore. Discount tire doesn't sell them so I guess I am stuck with 31's at stock height.

Discount can order tires if they don't have them in stock. I had to order a set of 27x8.50 R14 BFG A/Ts for my pickup a few years ago (they don't make THOSE any more), took them about a week to get them in.

Yep, BFG still makes them:
BFGoodrich Tires | All-Terrain T/A® KO | Tire Sizes & Specs

The other problem you may run in to is that nobody will want to mount them (a 33x9.5 (6.5-8.5" rim sizes) or a 31x10.5 (7-9" rim sizes)) on a 5.5" rim. But somewhere someone does because there are plenty of FJ40/55s running around with them mounted up.

I just called and they do sell them. They are $10 more a tire than the 31's. So what do you guys think I should get now? The 33x9.50's or the 31's?

I think the 9.50's will look majorly skinny.

BFG makes a 33x9.5x15 only in an AT, not an MT anymore. There are lots of pics here with the 33x9.5x15's....you gotta search, though....I've given up enough freebies!! You can find people to mount anything if you look hard enough....no one has ever given me grief.
