Rebuild Thread ~ 1983 FJ40 LX - Ex Aus

The container finally arrived and the three Ex Aussie 40's were duly unloaded

For shipping you have to disconnect the battery and drain all fuels. So once I got the truck into the workshop I put the battery on charge, I checked the oil (dirty but enough), checked the coolant (dirty but ok)

After charging the yellow top overnight it was time for the moment of truth.

I Chucked in 5ltr of petrol (gas), pulled the choke (its winter here now) and cranked it over. It took a few cranks for the fuel pump to prime itself and fill the carb, but then it fired up immediately, and to my utter amazement NO SMOKE.
I warmed it up slowly and took it for a short drive around our industrial estate.
The power steering is a bit noisy
The brakes are good
The clutch feels strong
The motor pulls like a freight train
The 5spd cogbox is really schweet.
The 4wd and low range all work fine

Btw the odo has 250,000km so it would be fair to assume that this is the genuine mileage.

The procedure we have to follow here to get the vehicle registered is quite complex.
1st we must obtain a weighbridge certificate.
2nd we have to get a police clearance certificate
These documents together with the customs stamped import documents are then submitted to the govt vehicle licencing authorities and registration can take a few months. Then once rebuilt we have to obtain a certificate of roadworthiness and only the is the process complete.

I will probably trailer the truck for weighbridge and police clearance

<< Am I crazy to start another rebuild >> ??

By the looks of it, I believe I have got a good rebuild candidate, it has a bit more rust than my previous rebuild - but still its repairable

In the next few weeks I will start the complete frame off teardown.

Watch this space

Opening the container-

On the driveway-

I have already started buying some of the parts for the rebuild
I have a Hell Creek 2.5" lift suspension, an ARB Bullbar, A Long Ranger Tank, ARB Air lockers, weatherstrips, and more
I'll Probably fit Pro-Comp shocks and BFG 33 x 12.5 x 15 muddies as well as a good set of bucket seats. . . . . . .

I have put together a HUUUUGE shopping list of parts that I have started sourcing from different parts of the planet. (USA - Australia) and some local.

Getting a Roof Gutter from SouthBoston.

Also got in a load of parts, that I flew in (imported) from CoolCruisers.

The quality of some of the weatherstrips leaves a lot to be desired, can anybody tell me if the weatherstrips from SOR are better quality than CoolCruisers.

But right now - I just cant wait to pull the body off.

All of the door parts from CoolCruisers were great all OEM Toyota.

Got some OEM front Indicators and rear tail lights from Toyota ZA

This is what the underside looks like - AARRGGHH

I have also installed a hoist, this should make the tear down and rebuild work a bit more comfortable.

Sweet looking build plans, have you got a link for the lights you bought ? I am keen on getting some OEM units that won't fade in 10 mins like the aftermarket units.

Hi SteelArt

I just went down to my local Toyota dealer and ordered them (they were pricey but the quality is well worth the xtra cost)

If you are that serious about this - maybe I can order you a set
I am coming to Aus in October on Business - I could chuckem in my hand luggage, where in Aus you situated ?

Cheers, I am in Brisbane, never thought of buying stuff off Toyota .. might give them a rings and ask. They had factory manuals in stock so guess they should have lights ...

If you don't mind letting me know what they are worth send me a PM.

Where did you source the seatbelts? They look very similar to the ones I got from CCOT. They are made in china of course...

I got the seatbelts and some other stuff from CCOT

and most of OEM stuff from Toyota South Africa.

As it is going to be a complete rebuild, I have been buying the new spares as I go along and decide that I will replace the old.
Then I will have the parts and dont have to start searching for them later.

But most of the stuff I have been buying is weatherstrips, emblims, lights and few other bits n pieces.

I have placed a large order with Don Kyatt in Oz for a load of rebuild kits, (carb, wheel bearings, steering knuckles, diffs, cogbox, transfer box) brake parts, master cylinder, slave cylinders, etc etc

I do not like the seat belts

I bought the same seat belts and they lock up all of the time and get tighter every second. I hate them

Thanks for the heads up
the only reason I ordered from CCOT was because Toyota couldn't supply me with OEM

Hmmmm, the teardown on my bj 42 at a similar stage, but I bet that you'll finish before me, I've got a lot more rust to deal with. OEM lights are the go, I've got a set of el cheapo taiwanese units on my hj 45 and they're pretty average, but they'll last until that vehicle has to come apart. I want emblems, Mr Toyota here I come.

UPDATE:

At sparrow fart on Wednesday morning, all of the body parts and the tub are being delivered to the bodyshop where they will undergo a few months of work, commencing with sand blasting, then rust removal, welding in new metal, prepping, and painting.

I will then finish stripping the axles out of the chassis, then I will sand blast and then powder coat the chassis

Any idea where to get that paint? Color codes? I'm trying to paint my 60 matte and haven't really found a good color.

I have just returned from the body shop now after dropping off the tub and body parts
The painter is going to mix me a few batches to color check - once I get the final color I will let you know the color code

But yes it is a normal gunmetal gloss with a matting agent.

We are also going to do a test panel with a coat of clear that has been matted as well.

I got some bad news from the body shop yesterday

Turns out the bib of the LX is fiberglass, it had obviously been changed by PO as a result of cruisercancer

Fortunately I had a spare one lying around from when I did the rebuild on Kermit - so it was sent to the body shop for sandblasting.
