Terrific FJ40 Upgrade...
'71 FJ40; F Engine. I have a non-vacuum distributor which requires a mechanical distributor. Ordered a Mallory hi performance Unilite 454101 digital distributor with infrared triggering (totally maintenance free), 29216 hi-output coil; 29351 active power filter...hooked them up in less than 2 hours (novice) and my babe idles at 650, 15-16# M/P; and timing spot on at the BB. Turn-key starts.
Took out the low rating Delco-Remy points distributor and coil...which idled terribly, could not keep consistant M/P; and consitantly had a run-on problem at shutoff; below average acceleration.....now no more timing, no more adjusting points, no more mixture adjustments, nothing but fun..all the difference in the world.
This is a highly recommended upgrade...I understand Mallory makes a vacuum distributor the same as this one......

I will have to look into this, I want to clean my 80 fj40 engine bay up with as few wires and vacuum lines as possible. I am lucky, here in FL there are 0 vehicle inspections, none at all ever. I will box up all my parts I pull off. Will be cool to have a distributor with 1 wire going to it, should look real clean.

Thank you for the good report
Nice post complete with part number and vendor link. What was the total cost? Can you post a picture of the distributor installed and where you mounted the coil?
Thank you!

Yeah no kidding considering I'm selling new non-usa dizzy (vac adv.) for $75 shipped.
That Mallory sure looks nice though. I have never had good luck with with the older dual points versions. I hated those things.

I've got the full mechanical advance one in mine. It was originally a dual point, and it sucked royally. It wore the points really quick, and performance was really not that great. It was in the truck when I bought it. A few years back I put a pertronix in it and it instantly was 1000 times better. At some point early last season the roll pin holding the gear on the shaft came/wore almost completely out and it gave my truck constantly variable ignition timing, which was interesting. I honestly wasn't sure what was wrong with the truck, some days it ran OK, some days it ran terrible, but the oil burning issue it always had got to the point it was embarrassing to drive, so I pulled the motor for a rebuild, and discovered the gear. So if yours all of a sudden starts running funny, I would check the gear.

4564101 ?
Mallory :: Online Catalogs
EDIT: Just noticed the link to summit with the right part no. Browsing the site I found the 47 series with a vac advance, oddly they show it as good for a BJ42

Think again. You can still get those from the dealer for around a C-note...

...it's not a non-USA dizzy, it's a stock replacement for a '65 FJ40...look surprised if they don't have one in stock and have to order it.

"'71 FJ40; F Engine. I have a non-vacuum distributor which requires a mechanical distributor."
I'm confused already.
Anything is going to run better than that Delco-Remy.
What's M/P?
No more mixture adjustments? That is a terrific distributor...
How does it stack up against a stock Toyota big cap dizzy? Or, for that matter against a stock '69 dizzy with a pertronix?
And did they ever fix that annoying drivegear problem?
For 400 clams it better fix ALL my underhood needs.
P.S. Turn key starts? Yeah, mine does that too.

I bet that it is the same distributor that Mallory sells to replace a GM straight six with a Toyota gear pushed on the bottom.
