running rich the bad way!

Hello,

I have been following this site for a couple of years now, I own a '96 fj80 and '74 fj40. I found that what ever problem I've had in the past from; check engine light (oxygen censor) to break adjustment the answer is always in old threads in your forum. So I would like to say Thanks.

I'm like most guys who hates to ask for help, but for my sanity sake and my marriage I'm going to bight the bullet and do so now!

I've recently swapped my daily driver from my 80 to my 40 for the summer. When I put the 40 away for the winter last year it was in desperate need of a tune up and a carb rebuild. Fast forward to this year, 2 week ago I completed those tasks. I put a new manifold gasket on, new points, condenser, plugs and wires, and then rebuilt the carb, I'm not a mechanic but fairly mechanically inclined and enjoy doing things my self. After setting the timing and adjusting the carb according to the haynes manual I thought I was in business. No such luck. The darn things running rich. It will run perfect on the short early morning commute to work but after it warms up hear comes the gassssss. It begins missing under load. I would guess at about 1500-2500 rpm. much like if you tried to drive with the choke on. I've check my vacuum lines and believe their hooked up properly, the float seams to be adjusted right (fuel is at dot level in the window). Double checked the primary jet and secondary jet placement. The one thing I did notice was a discrepancy with my venturi's from what the manual says. Mine are Identical, there is no large or small or what I can see that would distinguish them apart in any way. Could this be my problem? The carb has signs of being rebuilt before, so I know someone has been in there. This is my last ditch effort before I start searching for a local shop for repair. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks again

Gavin

Howdy! Are you sure that the choke is going 100% off when the engine is warmed up? John

The boosters (venturi) are identical in 74 carb, no problem there.

Are you sure it's rich? It's hard to get a stock 74 carb to be sloppy rich as long as the stock jets are in the correct holes.

Missing/flooding under load could be a missing power jet. Is there a power jet in the bottom of the power valve?
Is it a rational size (~75)?

Vacuum lines are mentioned, but there shouldn't be much in the way of vacuum lines. A short hose from carb base to choke breaker is about it.

just fix it

Hey guys thanks for responding, I actually fixed it. The carburetor was complete. What was wrong was somebody honed out the primary jet. It still had the had the spare screwed into the plug that screws into the float bowl so I just swapped it. Should have done it a long time ago, the reason I didn't was they both said they were size 14 but when held up together the one being utilized had a much larger hole.

Thanks Again

You gotta love POs. Glad to hear you fixed it. It is always a good feeling fixing problems that had you stumped at one point.
