fuel pump replacement

I got my fuel pump off and cleaned the area up. Got my new kyosan pump from JT off road and went to put it on. The directions told me to make sure that I put the spacer back in between the block and the pump or else it could destroy my pump and or my crank. The problem is that my old pump did not have a spacer when I took it off. Only a little gasket material and an old gasket. Do I need to make sure that I get a spacer before I try to crank it up. I already replaced the pump on the engine but have not tried to start it or anything. I was waiting to hear back from some of you all before I did something stupid. Please help me out with this issue. Thanks, RG

My 3f i replaced with a new pump and it didnt come with the spacer not thinking anything of it put it in and it got crushed. some come with long arm some with a short arm some long arm ones come with no spacer i.e my one that got crushed, i would double check the the pump for size it says make sure you get spacer so i think you better get a spacer before cranking the motor over or you could squash your shiny new pump arm

The spacer is used with the 1979-newer pumps. The 79-newer pumps are distinguished by having 3 push on hose connections, and ar crimped together (non-rebuildable).

The 1978-earlier pump does not mount with a spacer, unless it is going onto a much later engine block.

Jim, how can I get in touch with you about rebuilding a carburator? I emailed you a couple of weeks ago but don't know if you got the message. RG

Also, my 40 has an 78 engine in a 73 body. Nothing was wrong with the fuel pump that I took out. I think the diaphragm was cracked or something cause it just wouldn't pump.

Rocman, an email was sent from FJ40Jim to the rgarza67 address on Jun.29th.

The fuel pumps have 2 failure modes. A cracked diaphragm is the obvious one, because the pump will leak fuel rather than pump.
The other failure is the valve discs get scratched from passing dirty fuel and they will no longer make a good enough seal to move fuel. The only way to know for sure if this is a problem is to pull vacuum on the valves and see if they will hold vacuum for several seconds.

But if the pump arm is moved and fuel is not pumped, the pump is bad, regardless of root cause.
