Oil pan leaking, what to do?
The oil pan for my 78 seems to leak oil between the pan and skid plate. I have the pan off and it looks like it is seeping out under the plate, should I:
1. Try to fix it?
2. Put it back on the way it is because it is barley leaking at all?
3. Buy a new one, How much do they run and where would I get the best deal?

Most of the time one of the spot welds have a small crack around the edges..... can be easily brazed-welded from the inside....... or you can coat the inside with fuel tank sealer........ Gas Tank Sealer - Better than Kreem - KBS Coatings

Often rust will occur in that spot. If you pull it and clean it up you could have worse leaks then.
I would pull it and clean it with a pressure washer real well - then look for cracks and leaks.
I would recommend replacing it with a good used one - I've got one if you need it off of a 76.

How much for the used one?
I saw the one on e-bay, do you think that is the correct pan for a 78? were they all the same?

that ebay add is cheap if the price doesn't shoot up...
Oil Pan ~$200 at CCOT

Where do you put it? on the gasket? or around the skid plate?
What does F.I.P.G. stand for?

I thought it looked the same but was not sure, the part number is on it but I don't know what part # I need.
I can never get ahold of Cdan.

Fawking ImPenetrable Glue as the techs call it.

.....form in place gasket (FIPG). It is a gasket sealant that comes in a tube or a container. I have used both the Toyota fipg and off brands, they seem to be the same crap. Only one of the three auto parts stores in my area carries FIPG on their shelf. As I recall it was about half the price of the OE stuff. You might have to call around if looking for an off brand.

What about permatex ultra copper? I have always had good luck with that.

The copper stuff is great for intake and exhaust stuff but for the oil pan you want the black stuff. I've been using ultra black with extra oil resistance and it seems to work well. If you can get your pan off an actually get it clean and free of paint, rust flakes, and oil some JB weld will likely fix it up fine. I cut the edges of the plate off mine to weld the pan up, then I JB welded it over all the seams and it holds fine. A new pan is in my future eventually, but I have to recover from my engine rebuild costs for a while. Mine isn't pretty, but it works.
