Possible SM465 Problem

I have had an occasionally reoccurring problem that I have not been able to isolate but I think I have determined it to be in my SM465 trany. Once in a while, while in reverse there will be a binding to the point where it stops the truck and a few times it binds and then a loud pop. I have only had the "pop" twice and it is one of moments where you think "WTF was that"!! The PO rebuilt the trany so I don't believe it is from just being old and needing a rebuild. Can anyone enlighten me on this?
Thanks!!

How well does your parking brake on the transfer case work?

It works fairly well, wouldn't hold by it self on extreme angles but at most angles does good.
Could it be grabing when I am in reverse? (i hope)
Maybe it is not completely releasing and then grabbing hold in reverse?

A shoe could be dragging in reverse creating the noise you are hearing.

I went thru this a year ago and mine was the parking brake. Spend the money and get a complete rebuild kit with NEW springs since I did mine I have not had any issues , Now that does not mean you might have some other strange problem but it worked for me. 076-100A Parking Brake Shoe Replacement Kit-
Fits 1958-7/80-Comes with parking brake shoes, clips, springs, adjuster, washer, pins, transfer seal, and dust boot $82.84 here is the one I used from Spector
