2 days. Air tools were a must.
So today I got most of the sill installed. I used some scrap square 2" tube. I cut a section of it out and rotated it to invert it for the channel and welded back in. Then cut a few sway bar link bushings down and drilled a couple holes in the bottom of the tube and a big 2" hole in the back so I had access to the mount. Also coated the inside and outside with Rust bullets. Plan on getting a couple 2" frame plugs to cover the holes and seal it from water and mud. I'll also be capping the ends.
I tacked it in and then realized there was going to be a gap between the sill and the bed. So I put a section of agle iron under it to tie it and the sill in place.
Then welded all of it together in several spots. I'm going to spay the area again with rust bullets.
I had a friend come over today (John Lee) and help. I mentioned that I was going to make these great fenders only to have them ruined the first time I articulated the rears as the tires rub on the outer fender under extremem articulation. He suggested I tube the fenders. So that's what I'm going to do. lol. Will give me a fender flare in the process and give the ture something nice and smooth to rub on.
Anyone need a nice extended fender? lol
My buddy.
Some parts John blasted for me today.

wow, impressive progress here! keep it up!
planning on doing a rust killer paint job on my 60 soon, and that paint stripper looks like my new best friend! I'va got no garage, and zero friends to help me out, so i gotta get some of that grease... do you know of anything similar in international products? wuerth, 3M or something?
And i am a bit jelaus...the 60's got a LOT more area to work with, the 40's has probably only half the surface compared to a 60.
It's just goin to take som time!

Looking good! I'm impressed by the speed you're making progress. Are you a woodworker too? I see the dust collection stuff- I've been wanting one of those Jet dust filters like you've got for my very modest woodworking shop.

I traded wood for metal. Though I just put most of my woodworking stuff at the warehouse.

Got a little more done this weekend. Mainly spent the weekend with the family and drinking some Fat Tire that has finally made it. (Sweet nectar)
Does this position look familiar? lol.
This was a cruiser friend who was helping me out. John spent probably 4 hrs leaning over trying to see the parts. About 3hrs into it he told me it wasn't working well. Looked at the gun and the nozzle had not one but two holes in it where it wore through. I had just replaced it not long ago. It even ate through the gun. A new tip and inner tip and a little electrical tape and it was new again.
Moisture was a problem that day. Ended up filling the water separator up 3 times. I need to get a bigger one and make some drops in my main line.
Today I decided if it had a rust hole it was getting cut out. So first to go was the rear wheel well braces.
Stupid bench seat braces. They just trap the water.
Drilled the spot welds out and used the impact chisel on it. Came right off.
Had I actually gotten in a situation where I would have rolled It wouldn't have been pretty. My braces were toast the roll bar would have just gone through to the floor.
I bent some 2" pipe and cut it flat so it will weld up to some 16ga sheet metal. This will not be the support for the roll bar anymore I'll bring some tube up from the frame and through the middle of this.
Cut some metal out and put some 16ga back in. I've yet to decide how I will make the rib but it will eventually be there real or not.
Also decide to finish up removing all the paint on the last parts.
About this time people started showing up for a cruiser meeting so I stopped taking pics. I post more this week.

Hey sorry. None. Other than I've had to put it down due to handling GSMTR. Now that's over I'll be back on it full time shortly. Wife is due in 6 weeks so that is my goal to be finished. + I'd like to drive it this summer.

It's great as long as you keep the filters in it.

What a crazy 4 days. Spent at least 8 hrs each day working on it and I really feel as if I didn't get anything done.
Ended up just cutting out the door openings because of all the rust.
Going to cut down the freon tank to make an air tank that will fit into the back wheel well.
Welded this up from where the old Kayline was screwed into it. I don't like it so going to cut it out and weld a whole new piece on.
This is the start of the big project. At first I thought I would just bondo over it but the more I dug the worse it got. So I'm going to take the 1/4 in plate that was covering this mess and weld it in it's place.
Some help who refused to be photographed but had no problem drinking my beer.
Finally got these stripped all the way down.
Go the other side off to realize not only was it worse but there were signs of rivets in the sheetmetal from some diamond plate in it's PO life.
Whats left of the metal. Why they didn't bend the sheetmetal up instead of down so the water wouldn't collect is beyond me.
Look at the crap in there.
Also started filling in holes in the dash.

Well I moved the thread thought it would get to more people in here. Plus there is more than paint and body work going on.
I finally got everything painted with rust bullets so I can weld the 3/8 steel plate in. I also put a layer of panel adhesive on the bottom edge so I wouldn't have to weld it. Since this is the area that usually starts rusting.
Welded in.
This is where the majority of the crash damage was. I was going to just bondo over it. But decided to just weld in some 16 ga steel.
Then back for final fitting and cutting the bottom off the rear quarter panel.
Should have taken a before pic but I poured rust bullets inside the window frame and moved it all around. Also painted the areas on the outside that usually rust due to the window hinges, bottom window frame seal and the windshield weatherstripping in rust bullets. Should be a long time before it ever rusts.
Then sprayed with primer.
This is the hood almost finished.

I like the orange also, great idea on pouring the RB in the window and w/s frames. I've gotta put something on my corners I replaced last year. But that is just a bit in a list of many..
Keep it up and keep the pics coming.

Another idea I had though more expensive was to have the windshield frame dipped in nickel zinc. Would have cost me $75 but been well worth it as I think it would have outlasted the rest of the cruiser. I plan on having all the other parts (hinges, brackets, bolts, etc...) that are smaller done this way.
My wife restored these for me.

Man I thought mine was bad off then I see your project. I found about the same thing you did. Thought I would be able to do a little body work and move on. Almost a year later I've replaced part of the frame, installed a new engine, welded in body panels and still working. Can't decide if I like it or not but it will bw almost brand new when I finish.
Keep up the good work.
