How much POR should I order to put 2 coats on frame? I know some people have also done a coat of grey then black to make this easier. Also does anyone have any idea how long the leftovers will last in the can? Ill post some pics of the before and after. Thanks!

I used a half gallon at least on my frame and axles, you have to put a top coat on it also... used the same amount on that... so my paint is real think.. but that is how I wanted it...

I've used POR for years,muscle car resto, jeeps, trailers, frames etc.I've never used the precoated grey-then black, especially if your doing 2 coats, but I do use the cleaner & prep. If you don't really prep everything Good, it doesn't work that well. I've also not used the Top Coat much, that's mainly for UV protection, and even then, I took a trailer down to bare metal, prepped etc, & topcoat, held up good, but still faded ! Also if you haven't used it much, keep some WD-40 around, to get the POR off your skin ! Only thing that removes it ( if you do it quickly), else you wear it for a couple of weeks. Buy smaller containers, it only stores if you seal it really well, I usally turn mine upside down, once open to stop air from getting in the can

Not sure on the "how much" question....But if you use some saran wrap (sp?). Push it down in the can until it is in the coating (covers the surface), it will keep the air off of it, then put the lid on tight. Worked good for me for several weeks. Long enough to use it all up. As someone else said..buy the small cans.

I used 2 quart cans for my frame / axles. Covered nicely. I also thinned with laquer thinner for small spray jobs to get into the tight spaces easy.

Every comment posted above is right on track to my experiences. I also used OVER 1/2 a gallon of the por both top and reg. The saran wrap in my mind is a must if you ever wish to get the can open again. Not only does it seal the can but it makes a joint between the lid that allows it to seperate. Upside down can hmmm.... good idea!!!! Shelf life i have gotten away with 6 months now..... As for the UV i did do my frame and top coated it but because it is hard to see when you put black on black i missed a spot on one of my cross members and it has faded!

Hope this helps Oh and also I sprayed my por and top coat but i wouldnt call it spraying it was more like puking!! It is to thick and you need to thin with the proper thinner which i had for the top coat but accidently left it at home so ???? DONT USE A GOOD GUN!!!! It doesnt matter how hard you try and clean it is brutal!! (sorry i try to keep opinions out and maybe others have cleaned theirs??)

I just did my frame and axles and used 2 quarts. I have about a half pint left over, that was two coats on everything.

If you seal the can with plastic and store it in the fridge it can keep for up to a year,but you must seal it good since any humidity activates the drying proccess,if it hardens on the surface just punch a hole in the bottom of the can.
You can top coat it with other paints but must been done before it sets up completely should still be tacky for top coating.

I went through several foam brushes, they work good but go quickly. I used prolly 8 brushes with the two quarts... POR is hard on brushes. I went with brissels at first but you DO NOT want brissles imbedded in your POR...

that is very correct but be careful because i got impatient and topcoated mine a little early (tacky stage) and the lower por was still venting and bubbled up my topcoa like crazy!! We are talking a MESS! I would do exactly as mentioned above but wait untill it is soft rather than tacky.

i am getting close to doing this also and have heard the top coat that they offer dosnt flow out as good as the por.am thinking of useing like a ppg enamel sprayed...just want to make sure it is compatibe and about the spraying when it is still soft

if you read the directions on the back of the can, I believe it requires a different type of top coat if you want to spray it with something other than a POR product. I would follow the directions on the can, and not what some others are doing, but to each his own...

you are correct the chassis black does not go on as smooth as the por... pics in my build up thread at the beginning... but once you get the truck together you will not notice it is not as smooth... if people are concentrating on your frame, then you failed in the rest of your build... this is an FJ40 not a hotrod going to Barrett Jackson, and if it was then you should not be using POR to begin with... end of story...

I did my frame, axles and coated the tub in areas that are known to rust and it took 3 quarts. I coated the over the por 15 that was on the tub with 3M undercoating. I buy my brushes at the Dollar Store, you need a new brush after every use. Use a long sleeve shirt and rubber gloves when using por-15 also I wear those chemistry goggles when spraying the 3M undercoating.

POR with a brush will flow out smooth but not the chassis black which is the top copat for UV protection but it still looks good for axles and underneath and the frame

Also there are loads of products out there I did a write up on por vs rust bullet and lots of people piped in with their thoughts. Even got a utube video of Ted Nugents Bronco getting chassis saver applied!

ALl of the the above on POR is true but you can sub OSPHO for the metal prep and trisodium phosphate (TSP) for the aqua clean

if you want to paint over it you can use their topcoat primer then regular auto paint

I never open my POR cans. I just drill two holes in the bottom of the can opposite each other, then use a couple of # 10 stainless truss head Airplane screws to seal the holes. With the screws out I can pour out exactly the amount I need, and with them in place and the can upright my POR lasts for YEARS. I use it often for small jobs, sometimes only a capful at a time and this has been working great for me for years. Tim
