belt gonna stay or not
I am in the middle of a saginaw conversion and am wondering if i am going to run into a problem. my alternator is mounted below where i put my cruiser solution bracket. (same as jt bolt to the head) I am running a single belt. everything is kinda cramped in one spot. its not allowing as much contact belt to alternator as i would like. I am not sure if po moved alt there or if its supposed to be there. I do not have a double pully on the crank so this is how i set it up for now. Is anyone else running this set up. or am i just looking for trouble.

You could move your alternator to the other side with a later model alt bracket. It puts it on the passenger side up high like the ps pump. You probaly will need a longer belt and you'll have to lengthen the wiring to go across the front of the valve cover.

well thats what I am thinking I will have to do if if throws the belt. Or if I have a tension problem. the problem I have run into is the po bought a 2f motor but left it as a single belt. i will have to buy double pullys to run the alt on pass topside.

How would he drive the waterpump/fan?
That is the stock location for an F alternator.

Hmmm.... ok. I have a '75 2F and my alt was located on pass side, but it certainly could have been moved to that location before I got it. I missed the lower two-pulley part of the equation, doh!
The lower pulley shouldn't be too hard to find and certainly the alt bracket could be found. I think I may still have my old one. (my York install replaced it)

I was just kiddin' you anyway.
On both my '74 F1.5 and my 2F I did just that, mounted the alternator on the pass side and ran 2 belts, both drive the waterpump, figuring that I can drive a while without an alternator or powersteering, just not far with no waterpumpage.

Well that being said did you have to get new pulleys with double grooves when you swaped locations or was your truck already equiped.

As long as it's spinning it under load - roll with what you have. Otherwise you could get a .5" longer belt and push it toward the frame more, as long as engine flex doesn't put it into the frame, or like others have said, move it to the other side.

Mine is exactly the same as yours. I've been running it that way for years without a problem.

It already had the two-pulley set up when I bought the vehicle.

Hi All:
Do you have an "F" engine or a 2F in this '71?
If you have a 2F, no problem; just move the alternator from the driver's side to the passenger's side. The wiring switch is not difficult.
If you do indeed have the the "F" still things become a bit more involved.
Regards,
Alan
