New member seeks advice on purchase
Hi I'm a very new member to IHMUD. I've been driving a FJ60 for eight years now but only recently discovered the site. It is totally awesome! I've been wandering around discovering lots of great stuff. Anyways, I have wanted to purchase a 40 series for a long time and would appreciate some information.
I've found a very decent looking( in the pictures) FJ40 that has been rebuilt. It's not in my town so I haven't seen it yet but the owner says no rust on body( new metal welded in) and no rust on frame(stored inside alot). 3 inch lift 33 inch BFG good shape, Body is 1973 with disks added in front and power steering added but no bull bar. Hard and soft top with warn winch. The owner is asking $4000. Is this a good deal? Also I know there was a body style change in the mid 70's but I'm not sure what changed. Also what is the wheel base length on the 40's
Again I think this is a truly wonderful site!
Thanks

The FAQs will give you a good summary of the changes over time. The stock wheelbase is 90".

Think he means in the pics he has of the truck. Check it out. If it drives well it's a good deal. Can you find out what year the drive train is ??
Wheelbase is 90".

Only seen pictures so far? Smells like a Nigerian scam. Does this involve a 3rd party holding the money until you're satisfied?

Who knows ? Could be an owner that HAS to sell, lost job, whatever. Go see it and bring cash if it is true. The po of my truck put a TON of money into it and I bought it for 4K. It happens.

Thanks for the caution SouthBostonFJ -I hear what your saying and I've seen scams like that before. I don't think that's the case here. It's just that this FJ is in a different city. And I have to arrange a time when I can get there and meet with the owner. I think what WeedHopper is saying is true -especially these days. Have you heard what's happening to new car sales? GM could be broke in a matter of months! I read on another post that the number of listings for landcruisers on Craig's list has gone up significantly in the last year. All of these factors have got to affect price.

I agree, look it over closely or even have a mechanic check it out if you are not comfortable doing it yourself. At worst you loose the gas money and time to go check it out, at best you get a great deal on a sweet ride.

Still talking with the owner. Hope to make the trip in the next couple of weeks(every bodies schedules have to line up). If I had my way I would have made the purchase already. Anyways, the plan is to travel there and, like Weedhopper suggests, go with the cash and if it drives well it's a done deal. I promise an update with pictures if and when the deal does go thru.
Thanks

Dont waste your time, if that deal was legit it would be LONG GONE! Deals like that last a few hours, If it is still avail, that tells you its no beuno.

Wellcome,
I think you have made up your mind before you asked the question. If it is that good I would buy even if it had no motor, then stick a diesel into it. Or is it dieseled already?
Again wellcome , go fast and buy it and show these guys ...
Good luck to you.
Vic
Edit::: And I want this one
