I have a 17 year old daughter that is fortunately/unfortunately very good looking like her mother. When these young men come to my house the first time, I usually show them my garage. I will show them my wifes car (because it is the most expensive), and I dig the keys out of my pocket and I say " son, that car of my wifes is worth $40,000 and you would not dare come over here and ask me to borrow it. But you are here asking to take my daughter on a date and she is worth infinitely more to me than that car. Do you see what kind of responsibility I am placing on you for the time that you are out with my daughter?
Then I say something like " I don't mind going back to prison" . They are usually pretty somber at that point.
In order to keep this from being chat, where did you find the rattle cans and quarts of that paint? Do you have part numbers?

Paint Info
Copenhagen,
Thanks for the parenting tips. May come in handy sooner than I had hoped.
As to paint, I bought the first two cans at Home Depot and then they told me they don't carry it. Anyway, I found it online at Aubuchon Hardware:
Find Rustoleum Satin 12 oz Dark Olive at Aubuchon Hardware
I got the quarts at Home Depot in a city 45 miles from here.
The codes are:
Spray Enamel Dark Olive Satin: 241237 - Dark Olive
Enamel Dark Olive Satin Quart: 242110 - Dark Olive
So far I have used 8 spray cans and one quart. I think I am nearly done.

That is one sweet piece of work...It WILL get boys attention unfortunately for Dad, Fortunately for Shelby! Congrats!
Can you post a pic or two of the rear sill repairs? I'm researching methods to do this, and would be interested in seeing how you accomplished yours!
Cheers!

Rear Sill
I cut out the rust-both the sheet metal and the body reinforcement. I fabricated a replacement for the reinforcement out of 2" angle steel welded together. I mounted that to the frame with some rubber bushings and washers (body mount kits were out of my budget, but you could use those). I then threaded the angle steel for the spare tire carrier bracket. My friend made an L shaped piece of sheet metal that covered from the top of the bed down to the frame member. I riveted the metal to the bed and welded the metal to the existing sheet metal at the corners. A little filler to clean up my amateur welding and I was done.
I used silicone in the space between the two angle steel pieces (after welding) to keep water out.
Hope this helps.

"New" Soft Top
We found a Best Top Tiger Top - brand new from what we can tell-for $225. I called Best Top and got the hardware (snaps, screws, etc) for under $20. We got the frame, top and full soft doors. Gotta love Craigslist.
We have started installing it and like the way it looks. No more hard top for us!
We also got some half doors that came with Cadet. Cleaned them up and they match very well. Will use these until the weather gets cold.
Also included a shot of the cleaned up engine compartment.

Windshield on-On the Road!
Finally got the windshield today. Fantastic guy named Mynor and his glass shop Pronto Glass in Concord, CA. $227 out the door installed. He did a great job.
Thanks to Blake for providing the template...saved me some grief and money.
Here's some additional pix of Cadet. Thanks for all the tips and advice. Down to a short list of things to do-like teaching Shelby to drive

Great looking cruiser! I love the tires and stock wheels. I'm going back to stock myself and have been on the lookout for wheels.

Just found your thread. What a great story! Too bad there is one less FJ40 in Nevada, but I'm sure the cruiser is much happier now.

driver's Ed
Thanks for all the great feedback.
Teaching Shelby to drive is easier than I thought. The 40 with soft top is small enough for her to feel confident in. The three speed is easier on the column than driving Sherman with 4 on the floor. With the skinnier tires, the lack of power steering is not too bad for her either.
BB is selling us a disc brake axle and soon Cadet will have power brakes with discs-probably the only thing I am still concerned about with the cruiser for Shelby.
Now to refinish some hard top doors for the winter...

Tires
Thanks. They are TSL Radials in LT215/85R15. They are approximately 30" tall and 6.5" wide. They were the closest I could find to the original 7.00 x 15 tires without spending a bunch more money. In fact, the tread pattern nearly matches an old Goodyear traction tire I had. I got them for about $110 each.
See link:
TSL RadialTITLE | Interco Tire
I bought them through 4 wheel parts, but was not happy with them. I would buy them from Summit Racing. See link:

Hard Doors complete
Finally. End of summer hit fast and realized we needed the doors for Shelby to drive to school. We bought the SOR door kits (well worth the money in my opinion) and window regulators from CCOT (good quality, but a gold tone in color). After a few days of sanding and painting, we reassembled and they are good to go. I used silicone spray in the channels and the windows work fantastic.
I have more detailed photos and assembly tips if somebody is in the same stage and needs them (I sure could've used them).
Also we used a dynamat product inside the doors which seems to reduce road noise. Note the eye bolt on the passenger door where the factory limit bracket was missing. I used some parachute cord for door limiters for now. Working well.
The doors fit tightly due to the new weatherstrip, but will hopefully loosen up a little. Couldn't get anymore adjustment at this time.
Still looking for a suitable plug for the hole below wind wing.
Thanks to my son Alex for helping me on these.
Cheers

Daily driver
Forgot to get a shot of Alex helping on the doors. We then moved the mirrors to the doors which help a lot with visibility.
Shelby quickly got the hang of 3 on the tree and is now using Cadet for her daily commute to school. Her only complaint is terrible squeak from the rear cargo doors and no cup holders.
Lots of stares from guys (should have thought of that when I started) Shelby says most can't picture a girl driving this vehicle. Shelby is constantly pointing out that Cadet is a Land Cruiser, not a Jeep. Other people can't believe 1) Cadet is 40 years old and 2) a 16 year old girl is driving a 40 year old vehicle.
Next project: power brakes with discs up front (after the cup holders of course).

Very cool Greg! Looks great. I still have to get the hub socket out to you - just found it last night.
Hope the disc axle swap goes smoothly!
