Help..removing TRE from Tie Rod

Help..removing TRE from Tie Rod.

Ok, all the Tie Rod Ends have been seperated and rods removed from rig.

Now I cant get the old rusty TRE (#2 in picture below) off the rod. Any secrets?

I removed one end but now have nothing to hold on to when turning the other end. Aggrevating!

I have read that others use heat but where? Heat Rod to expand the TRE end gets hot too ???

Also, do the ends all thread on clockwise?

Any help appreciated.

First, one TRE is clockwise threaded and the other is counter-clockwise threaded. That may be your problem right there. I put mine in a vise, loosen the jamb nut and then unscrew the TRE. Once you identify which way to unscrew it, you could use a pipe wrench on the TR, too. You can heat the TR around the threaded portion of the TRE if it's all rusted in, but I would use PB blaster or similar....use the hot wrench last IMO.

Pipe wrench to hold, heat to loosen.

Cool

Try this: Steering Linkage Rebuilding complete how to for your tie rod ends including which way to turn the ends to get them on and off.

Which way did the other one come out? You can also tell by the jamb nut and/or just looking at the threads closest to the very end.

(1) Soak in PB Blaster - the longer the better. (2) Use 2 pipe wrenches; one on tie rod, other on TRE. (3) You should be able to determine which way to unscrew the TRE by examining the exposed threads.

Well then looks like another trip to Harbor Freight to buy 1 or 2 pipe wrenches.

Thanks for the tips!
