Do like I do, and probably most on here, stay in the right lane and go slow....Since I used to be a sports car guy, I've found that because the FJ is so slow, it has eliminated my road rage tendencies....

It will do 70 all day long as long as it is running in reasonable tune.

Why do you feel you have to go fast? Peer pressure?
I know my Pig will do 80mph, but it doesn't like it, I don't care for it either. I drive 55. People go around me. If I can find a nice big truck doing 55 I'll settle into it's draft and stay there. Slow is good.

Get use to the slow lane or buy a 5spd.

My 74 can hit 70 at a bit over 3k rpm, with 31 inch rubber overdrive.

For safety reasons I don't go over 60 usually. Not worth the reduced handling and gas mileage to go faster.

With a warm 383 and 37" tires my 40 will zip past 80, but it is much more relaxing and easier on fuel to run in the 55-60 crowd.

I pushed my '73 past 70 going through Denver long ago and it was anything but fun, loose steering and ruts in the road made for a terrible experience.

If you are looking for better road RPM's you can drop your gearing but then the I-6 may start to feel a little sluggish. Rubber overdrive, maybe 3.73 diff's than maybe a 5 speed or auto w/OD.

In my 70 with a 350, 35's and the 5:29's in her, I can sprint at 70mph. That's at 3500rpm. I cruise at 60 and always get there. Just never be in a hurry. I'm a better crawler

Keep the 4:11's They are better!
I cruise at 55-60 and don't care who gives what kind of look. They can , as my daughter says, "build a bridge and get over it!"

I have 4.11's + 31" tires and choose to cruise at 55mph/2790rpm.

62mph/~3100rpm is easily possible, but I don't like to cruise that high (but I'm diesel, maybe a gasser would be fine at the higher rpms, dunno).

Here by San Fran 55 is just fine in the right lane. In Chicago I'd be a speedbump in someone's rearview mirror...

Thats what pull outs are for. If I see three or more cars behind me I use a pullout.

I have a 73 with the stock 3 speed and 50mph sounds like it is screaming. Believe it still has the 4.11, but without a tach not sure how fast she is turning. I have P265/75R15's on her now. Any ideas?

3rd gear/top gear. is 1-1. i'll ball park it at around 3K rpm. you still have 1500ish till red line.

Change the rear diff gear oil. The rear diff is in use full time. It needs new oil.

Change the transmission oil. Same reason as above.

Check the front diff oil. Doesn't need replacing as often, but if it's sludgy, you'll need to rebuild the steering knuckles. Sorry, but it's one of those things every owner puts off. And now you own it. You can put it off too, but you should at least find out where you stand.

(I put it off for a couple of years. Finally got around to it after sweating through a couple months of death wobble. YMMV)

ps - Welcome to mud

Brake master isn't too bad. You have to be aware of the clearance/adjustment on the actuator rod and getting all the air out of the system.

The knuckles are kind of a big, messy job. No special tools if you're starting from a working assembly (like you are). If you find out you need to do it, you'll want to study up first so you do it right the first time. On the other hand, you can ignore the knuckles for quite awhile and still be OK. They won't fall apart on the road; usually your steering and handling will deteriorate gradually.

Search will get you all the technical info you need on those two jobs.

I could not agree more with the go slow advice. Even if the motor is good for 85mph the chassis is not safe at that speed. I treat 65mph as an upper limit. It's a short wheelbase high COG truck. Go slow, stay within the braking envelope and enjoy. Get a car if you want to go 70+.

i usually hang around 55 or 60 with my '76, but i can push it to at least ~70 befor the belt starts to whistle. if i got a smaller belt i could maybe hit 80, but since all the highways around here top out at 65 theres not much reason to push the engin that hard. i get on i-10 and drive 55 in the right lane. kinda reminds me of a foghat song...

I routinely drive my 76 FJ40 at 65-70mph.
35" tires, 3200 rpms, 4th gear.

With the saginaw power steering, tight steering components, and good spring bushings, I can drive it that fast with 3 fingers on the steering wheel (obviously I don't drive that way all the time, but I think you get the point).
