Gas tanks
Sorry, could not find what I was looking for in search.
Looking for a spare gas tank for my '64, don't know how much longer mine will last. Up to what year did Toyota make the same gas tank as found in my '64 40? Thanks __________________ Dean 1964 FJ40 Hard Top...resto, going back to original stock! |

I ordered one for my '67 from Toyota (Dan, specifically). He could only look it up back to 1969, but it worked in my '67 just fine. Couldn't be happier. Hope this helps.

According to Spector, 1958-1967 are the same - Specter Off-Road-Land Cruiser Parts - Search On-168-09.

I really think a 61 thru 72 would fit. 58 thru 60 (FJ25) the tunnel cover is wide all the way back on the passinger's side not cut in like the FJ40. So I doubt a FJ40 tank would fit. The FJ25 soft top model has a totally different filler neck. The tanks in the later ones (71/72?) have extra emissions ports that would have to pluged.
John Dean measure the filler gauge I'm not sure which one the 64 has. The early one is smaller. Tell me the size and I will let you know which one you have. I guessing if your's is a early 64 it may be the small one. John |

Hmmm...not so simple a question was it.
I was kind of hoping I could find the replacements before I tried to take things apart. I'll try and get some more info off the tank this week-end...if I'm having this much fun with an old 40, well I just can't wait to start the 25!!!

the pre 67 is unobtainable new. Look at the POR gas tank refinisher systems. Like Kreem for a motorcycle tank, but more of it. If you need a donor early tank (that will need to be refinished) I might know a guy in VT with one. I had mine professionally done and it lasted 2 years, costing the same as a new 71 tank. Definately not worth it.

My first response was also not considering that this will be a full resto. I'm 99% positive that you can no longer get a new, older style tank from Toyota. Only the later style, which, as I stated, will work in an early FJ40 (at least in a '67). Not resto correct, though, I can't remember what is actually different.
Maybe there are still some lucky NOS deals out there. The refinishing kits work well if the tank isn't too rough. I'm very happy with the results I had from Eastwood's kit in an old MG.
Depending on how much rust through you have, it may be worth it to weld in new metal. Obviously, if you don't know exactly what this requires, hire someone who does. |
