Gas tanks

Sorry, could not find what I was looking for in search.

Looking for a spare gas tank for my '64, don't know how much longer mine will last. Up to what year did Toyota make the same gas tank as found in my '64 40?

I ordered one for my '67 from Toyota (Dan, specifically). He could only look it up back to 1969, but it worked in my '67 just fine. Couldn't be happier. Hope this helps.

Many times you'll see a generic '58 to '67...and many times they are not. This time you'll also see that this is a new updated tank using another sender, so it would not be right in a restoration.

Maybe a '67 tank will work...you still have a part number?

I really think a 61 thru 72 would fit. 58 thru 60 (FJ25) the tunnel cover is wide all the way back on the passinger's side not cut in like the FJ40. So I doubt a FJ40 tank would fit. The FJ25 soft top model has a totally different filler neck. The tanks in the later ones (71/72?) have extra emissions ports that would have to pluged.

Dean measure the filler gauge I'm not sure which one the 64 has. The early one is smaller. Tell me the size and I will let you know which one you have. I guessing if your's is a early 64 it may be the small one.

Anwered your PM. My mistake I meant to say the float not filler The filler was the same all the way thru 72. The ring size of the float changed around 64. The larger later style I think can still be had new. I think you may have to match the float to the gauge. If that's true you will have to replace the guage if you have to go to the larger float.

Just checked SOR site. They show the same fuel gauge early all the eay thru 72 but sending unit (float) changing starting in 66. Old style discontinued/Used $35.00 but none in stock. But if this is true you won't have to change your gauge if you get a later tank with the larger sending unit.

Hmmm...not so simple a question was it.

I was kind of hoping I could find the replacements before I tried to take things apart. I'll try and get some more info off the tank this week-end...if I'm having this much fun with an old 40, well I just can't wait to start the 25!!!

If you already know the answer, why are you asking? I apparently missed the fact that you were working on a full resto. Next time I'll skip on trying to help you out. Besides, you could also add a little more info than simply "looking for a spare tank for my 64". If you read what I posted, I never said "buy from Spector". I said that they said a 58 - 67 were the same. That would answer the question you asked.

the pre 67 is unobtainable new. Look at the POR gas tank refinisher systems. Like Kreem for a motorcycle tank, but more of it. If you need a donor early tank (that will need to be refinished) I might know a guy in VT with one. I had mine professionally done and it lasted 2 years, costing the same as a new 71 tank. Definately not worth it.

Dude, I appreciate your answer, but I wanted to let you know to be careful of those generic '58 to '69 listings, they are not always accurate.

Not that I need to justify...but I am looking for a spare tank for a serious restoration project, and wondered exactly what year model to look for to see if I could find a new one...I now know that had mine been a later '64 model I could have used '67, but seeing as it's an early '64, I need to find a clean used '63 and older tank.

Two years sounds pretty short for such work, and this is why I was looking at my options to try and find a new one from Toyota that would fit the make and year.

When you say 'you know a guy in VT', do you mean Tyke? I spoke with Tyke, and he didn't have any spare tanks...I'll probably need to find one from the south west somewhere.

Basically I don't want to finish this restoration, and have the tank go bad on me in a few years...if you have any other contacts in VT, then please send me their coordinates.

My first response was also not considering that this will be a full resto. I'm 99% positive that you can no longer get a new, older style tank from Toyota. Only the later style, which, as I stated, will work in an early FJ40 (at least in a '67). Not resto correct, though, I can't remember what is actually different.

Maybe there are still some lucky NOS deals out there. Not sure how long the older tank has been discontinued.

The refinishing kits work well if the tank isn't too rough. I'm very happy with the results I had from Eastwood's kit in an old MG.

Depending on how much rust through you have, it may be worth it to weld in new metal. Obviously, if you don't know exactly what this requires, hire someone who does.
