thanks coolerman, key info right there. i need to get more familiar with the search. quick question, can i just replace the ebrake drum with one from a 4 speed and be done with the front end of the rear dshaft? also i have a newer front third laying around with that bolt pattern, can i remove that flange and bolt it onto my old rear third?

thanks

Yes... you can just replace the drum.

You can swap the flanges too as long as the spline count on the pinion is the same. Refer back to the post with the diagram of flanges. 74-78 is 10 spline and 78-84 is 27 spline, they are not interchangeable but they have the same bolt pattern.

I can't recall on the t-case drum so someone else will have to answer that q for ya.
As for the flanges, IF they did not use a crush sleeve on the pinion gear then you can easily swap flanges.

SWEET! Looks like I have everything I need to finally drive my rusty, tunnel-less, beaten, tired, front driveshaft-less, no passenger seat, 4 SPEED FJ40. And I'm gonna LOVE EVERY MINUTE OF IT!

Thanks guys

Andy

I' just finished my 4sp and 2f swap into my fj 45 last week. This is the 3rd 45 I've owned and I FINALLY did the swap to 4 sp. With 33" tires and all the hills where I live, not to mention it's a pickup and gets loaded down with all manner of stuff. You are gonna be really happy you did it. I had all the same issues, plus pto stuff, which was a project in itself. I was so excited to test it out, I drove to a buddies house with no tranny hump and must have had 3 or 4 sockets roll out into the road....55 year old kid with a new toy.
