Real Time Help! Longfields too short for snap ring
i have a '76 and apparently the longer stock birfs. i am sitting her trying to install my brand new longfields for this weekend and it is maybe 1/8" too short to put the snap ring on the other side of my drive flange (i do NOT have selectable hubs). am i SOL? i am trying to get this back together for this weekend. how important is the snap ring in holding the whole hub onto the spindle/knuckle?

Hi All:
Yes, you can run 'em without the snap ring on the end, but this condition allows the Birf to move in and out of the knuckle, causing premature wear of the inner axle seal. You can use a fender washer and a short metric bolt on the end of the Londfield to retain it in place. Good luck! Alan |

The snap ring locates the axle assembly in the knuckle.... Quote:
Being that he has the drive flange and not lockouts, he would need to find a washer that would retain the axle outward against the end of the drive flange, and still allow the dust cap to be installed over it. |
