Ujoints/driveshafts

I finished the 4spd swap in my 72 about 3 months ago... And in that time totaly forgot about D-shafts. I tore the orignals down and primed them up then realized they are too short/long.

I have a brand new set of ujoints for the orignal shafts that I had planed on swaping in. My question is can I rebuild these shafts with the 'wider' bolt pattern flanges to fit the existing pinion&tcase flanges or are the parts difrent for the later trucks?

I just wanna this thing...

Hi All:

You could re-build your existing drive shafts with the new u-joints then have the tubes modified to fit your new tranny/t-case combo.

If you are running the original "three-speed" t-case the existing flanges on the drive shafts should be fine. If you used the "four-speed" t-case that came with the H41/42 tranny then yes you will need to switch the t-case end of the 'shafts to the "four speed" pattern yokes.

Clear as MUD?

Good luck!

Alan

Yes I know I can have them re-tubed but I would rather use stock parts, and keep the cost down a bit. I can use the 4spd shafts if I find a set, correct? I did use the orignal 3 spd Tcase for the lower low range and all the flanges still match up.

I have ben working on this thing for almost 2 years now (got the frame back from the galvi guys exactly a year ago) and its gettin to the point where the drivetrain is coming together etc. The body is almost ready for paint and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Some times I wish I wasnt so picky LOL

You cannot just bolt in 4 speed shafts as the bolt pattern isn't the same... there is a chart somewhere that breaks down the differences, can't find it right now. According to SOR and cruiser outfitters, the u-joint changed in '74 which is right around when the 4 speed came out so it seems that you could not create a mix 3-speed/4-speed drive shaft, you have to make the changes on the xfer and pinion flanges and change shafts or re-tube. The 4-speed shafts/flanges is a stronger setup.

Keep going... the light will get brighter!

Hi All:

Sorry dude - if you still have the '72-vintage diffs, and a "three-speed" t-case you will need to use all old-school pattern flanges.

I am personally using a mix n' match - old style diff flange pattern along with the newer four-speed pattern. So, the drive shafts use the old-style bolt pattern at the diffs, and the newer style at the t-case. This works by mixing 'n matching drive shaft parts from different year 1970s-vintage Land Cruisers.

Since you are using all three-speed parts you will probably need to have your three-speed drive shafts lengthened to work with the longer drivetrain in your truck.

Good luck!

Alan

Cool

If you want all stock parts then order the course spline flanges from Cruiser Outfitters for the front and rear axles and the front t-case output then find a set of 4 speed drive shafts and a 4 speed t-case e-brake drum. That will give you all Toyota stuff so if you pretzel a shaft on the trail you won't be stuck trying to locate a bastard drive shaft that only fits your rig.

You should be able to buy all the parts cheaper than you can have your shafts modified, and will end up with stronger shafts. Then sell your existing shafts and the new u-joints to recover some of your costs.
