Transmission leak?

Can someone identify the missing bolt in this picture. if you look just in front of the pan... there is a hole. i believe it used to be filled with a bolt like the one a little closer to the protective plate.. the last time I put it into 4wd, the matching one must have popped out and a puke green liquid came out. Is that transmission fluid? 80w90? it seemed an odd color. Any help on the size/pitch thread would also be helpful.... is it a drain plug? or is it a larger issue?

thanks

That is a drain hole.

I have seen a rubber plug in some of those inspection covers...

Poser, You are my favorite person so far today.... i am glad it isn't anything more.... any suggestions on whether I should plug it with a bolt? or another rubber plug? I can't imagine if using rubber stoppers that it would be vehicle specific....

Well that hole is not threaded, so a push in style rubber plug could be used to seal the hole up.

I have not had one in my cover(s) for the 20 years that I have been using my Land Cruisers.

If you find a plug, put it in, if not, I would not loose any sleep over it.

So, pardon my ignorance, but it isn't important? is it just a protective plate? to be more clear.... if i drive without the plug, I am not going to damage the transmission, right? (just by not having the plug there).

just so we are clear... it is the circled area....

things are looking up if that is the case....

This pan is used to collect oil from the back of the 2F engine, which the 40 uses to mark it's territory in the absence of any other usable leaks in the engine or drive train.

Cool

Maybe you should take the other bolts out, drop the inspection cover, use a flashlight and see just what is going on?

My cruiser leaks from this hole. I suspect a rear main leakage... but will start with the pan first.

Not in his FJ40. That is not a automatic transmission in the picture.

Okay, thanks everyone for the input... I am trying not to cause any unnecessary damage if i shouldn't be driving it...
so is it a collection spot for oil? gear oil? both? and the way i discovered it was because i put it into 4wd to make sure it was working... and all of a sudden.... this thing was pouring out fluid. Could engaging 4WD Low cause the plug to blow?
