IT'S ALIVE! ('76 harness into my '65)
Just about done with my wiring job. I stripped all the wiring from the '65 fj 45 and installed the entire harness from my '76 donor fj 40. The harness was in nearly perfect shape with no added wires or problems. The 45's was a total mess, most of the wires being white lampcord.... Because I used the 40's powertrain and instrument panel, it went remarkably well. To help keep it clean and simple, I used the dash switches from the '76, but not always in the original location. In time I may want to go to the original switches, but for now it was just plug and play. I used the original '65 ignition switch in the dash, and of course there were some small issues. I still need to run the headlights through the floor dimmer switch, so I can stay out after dark. The truck looks better than in the photos because I finished the bed over the weekend and hit the road around 2:30 Sunday afternoon. Been at a fever pitch because as predicted, this was our first warm summer weekend in these parts. Last tags on this truck were 1984 Arizona. Damn, it's nice to be back in a 45!

Cool Gary. So, I'm assuming the first photo is the "before" picture?
Where's the after photo of the dash? Todd. |

Thanks for the post. I'll soon be putting a harness and switches from a '78 40 in my wife's '65 45. Glad to know it's not that bad a job.

Todd, It's really sanitary but my camera is on the fritz... gotta send it back to canon unless you can send me a wiring diagram for it.... Just came home from delivering 17 interior doors to a jobsite in that 7' bed. I love the worktruck write-off thing. Hey, it's legit. Just try to stop me from driving it off island to a Seattle cruiserheads meeting.

Thinking of taking it off island tomorrow. I'm told they have real cops over there. Do I need headlights and wipers and turn signals even if it isn't dark or raining? How about doors? I have parking lights front and rear, and brakelights.

I'm sure you can get by without headlights and wipers if it's dry and during daylight hours. Be sure to signal turns with hand signals (even though I don't think many people these days understand hand signals). You might get ticketed anyway, depending on the local regs. Claim that you just realized they weren't working on the way over.
Doors are not required. Have fun, Todd. |
