hj47

Anyone out there know about or own one of these hj's?
I'm on the verge of buying one and making it my only vehicle.
I hear they are indestructable.
Thanks

hj47

Anyone?

Is 18k too much for an hj47 with ac, power steering, very little rust, 110k miles , needs paint and bib assembly.

Depends, you're not buying it from Vintage Off Road, are you?

Take a look at it if it's local, see what the owner has (receipts, etc...) Depends on what shape it's in. Post up pics if you can

There's plenty here on HJ47s.

Read this for example:

Thanks. It's Globalclassicimports, he's legit. But I'm still scared as hell to spend 18k on a 28yr old truck. It needs paint and bib assembly.

I don't like to comment on prices - And I'm not familiar with prices where you are anyway.

I'ts a nice looking wagon. But I'm surprised it is not being sold complete. That makes me wonder what else is missing that you're not being told about.

I see the cover has been removed from the windshield wiper motor for some reason too - and has been left sitting on the cowl.

If it is comiing from Australia - Why aren't the missing parts fitted because they should be easy enough to source there?

At the very least - You seem to be dealing with "an unusual seller".

With the vehicle being "improperly prepared for sale" as it is, I would expect the asking price to be at the low end of the range that you would expect to pay for such a vehicle in your vicinity.

Its in pieces because it is being prepared for paint. All the parts are there. I can buy it as is put back together for 18k but I'd have to buy the bib assembly(about $500)

It has New South Wales Licence plates & a fishing rod holder on the bull bar so it may have seen some beach work. I'd check it out thoroughly before you go ahead. I'm guessing you could probably buy one here & ship it for less money but more effort. (Check out Matt's "Save Me" thread). That being said, Yes they are a bloody tuff truck - thats why there are still so many of them on the road . . . . Well our roads anyway! Good Luck

Sorryma

Are you in the USA?

If so, agree with Matty Awful. You can find one in Aust, buy it and ship it to the USA way cheaper than the asking price.

X2. I just did this and it wasn't anywhere near $18k.

Yes, I'm in the U.S, N.C. to be exact.
I will look into the buying and shipping idea, sounds good.
Thanks again.

For some advice you could look to:

Matt Mcinnes - (On the Big Island)
Jsaltlick - New England area of the USA
Bull - Northwest USA
OrangeFj45 - Central California

They have all imported rigs and can walk you through the hoops.

I'd be damn leery of that one getting new paint because of the aforementioned rod holders. Could be lots of rust there.

Quite happy to inspect anything in and around Melbourne/Victoria, have contacts in Sydney and Brisbane too who can inspect for me further afield, along with aiding shipping.

Small fee + fuel as I did for cruiser_007 who now has his there in TX

You could have somthing like this shipped to your door for the above price and still have lots of change. Air Con PTO and ARB Rear. The only draw back is shipping time.

Inspection photos for Matt W of Recyclingthepast.

As you can see his arrived last week another happy man. Along with his BJ40 and BJ42, he also has a top FJ45 and second HJ47 in bound. The second HJ47 and FJ45 are top trucks.

This maybe for sale via recyclingthepast along with the FJ45. (Arriving NJ mid July)

sorryma there is rust in the rear sill of that yellow one you are/were looking at, can tell from the pic, also looks very patchy paintwork on the rest of the body, I am guessing there's a fair wack of bondo in those panels :(

Hard to find actually, have tried a few salvage yards but no look as yet.

Cool HJ 47 parts

I'm a new owner of an hj 47. does anyone know if the parts are compatible with the fj 45's. I need brake and suspension parts. i know the engines are different but what about the other parts and lift kits. Any info on how and where to get parts would be a huge help. i have a place in central america that we use these vehicles to the extreme.
my website is Belizebamboo.com
thanks for any asistance out there.

Most of the parts between a FJ45 and BJ/HJ45 or HJ47 are shared, within a given group of production years. The 47's came out after 1980, so they share the greatest number of parts with '79~'84 #J40~45 vehicles.

To give an example, the exhaust systems between a FJ and HJ are identical, save for the first 3' of pipe coming out of the manifold.

Front suspension and steering parts, are shared for the most part across all models of 40 series trucks, however the rear suspension and stock drum brakes on the long wheelbase trucks are larger and heavier duty by far than the same parts found on the short wheel base trucks like the 40/42 series.

The parts that are unique to the HJ47, as compared to the FJ45, are involved primarily in the engine parts zone, 2H diesel vs. 2F gas engine, and parts like motor mounts, radiator, alternator, water pump, etc are different between those engine models. The electrical parts associated to the 2H diesel, namely EDIC system, glow controller/timer, etc, are also not shared with the FJ45, nd vice-versa for emissions control equipment for the FJ45 installed in certain markets (probably not Central America)

47 series with full floater axles have a similar 4-bolt flange axle as the 60 series. Not sure about the FJ45 in that respect.

FJ45's had a power steering option from the factory, something never offered in the HJ45/47. Power steering can be retro-fitted to the HJ47, but it requires some creativity and willingness to modify the radiator.

Diesel engined trucks, whether BJ45 or HJ45/47 also had extra sound deadening fitted to the underside of the hood, while FJ45 did not have this extra material.

As far as aftermarket suspension, lift kits etc, there are a few choices. OME's Dakar series has options for the 45/47 series in both medium and heavy rate springs, and SOR sells spring sets specific to the 45/47. Sprungart in Australia makes some great shackles, in both standard length and extended.

If you go with springs like the OME Dakar, which give you a 2~2.5" lift, then you will need to consider extended shocks (also available from OME) and extended anti-sway bar links.
