Where to buy a radiator?

Where's the best place to buy a radiator for my '82 FJ40? And what's the difference between the A/C radiator and non A/C radiator?

Hi All:

Buy a genuine Toyota radiator! Well worth the $$!

Aftermarket replacement radiators are a crapshoot in my experience.

I'd imagine the the difference between the AC and non-AC versions is cooler tubes for the AC system (or something like that.)

Regards,

Alan

There have been three threads on this in the last 3 months. Search.

If you can't be bothered, any of the aftermarket places (google for "radiator") can get one to your door for cheap. Radiatorbarn is popular on this board and while many people (myself include) might consider them low quality, no one has chimed in with a failure.

Personally, I vote OEM or recore.

Actually, I have searched and I maybe missing it but I still have not been able to find the difference between the A/C version and non A/C version radiator for the '82. At the same time prices, brands, and quality can change in the aftermarket overnight and I like to stay in real time here. Thanks.

Now now, would you have lied to your mother like that? I kid, the serach can be irritating. This search for "aftermarket radiator" will help:
IH8MUD™ Forums - Search Results

Or just jump right in with these results:

Where is the best place to buy a radiator???

Replacement Radiator

radiator interchange?

Difference between aftermarket and OEM Radiators?

Radiator!!

I can't help you with the AC question, however.

Also, don't worry, the aftermarket industry for 30 year old radiators is actually not changing overnight...

Does Toyota reference 2 different part #'s for A/C & non A/C rads? If there are 2 dif part #'s, the A/C rad might have added cooling capacity/size, because the A/C condenser is in front of the rad which allows the hot air from the condenser to flow thru the rad. The A/C unit is pretty much selfcontained except for common belts, pulleys, and electrial supply.

I have purchased several rads from the Rad barn w/no complaints. The FJ40 applications were identical to the stk 1 in appearence & fit, the FJ40 runs at the same or lower operating temps as it did w/the stk 1, except no leaks. I don't understand the "crapshoot" comment when the rad comes w/a lifetime warranty. I have no affiliation w/ the rad. barn. I do believe, I received good service, price and product from them.

I tried repairing both the 82 (installed 7 years ago) and 79 (installed 10 years ago) to no avail. I ended up ordering them from Cool Cruisers and have had no issues. I also ordered one for a 4x4 toyota pickup last year from Radiator Barn and it came with free shipping. It does not have turbo but got one for a turbo since it was bigger than the original one. And no problems w/it either.

The thing about radiators and thermostats for that matter is if you let them overheat their integrity goes down hill pretty quick. At this point it's easier replacing them instead.

A/C rads are wider than non A/C rads, maybe 2 to 3" You cannot just swap one for the other as the mount is different/ wider. So you need to replace with which everone you have.

Any good rad shop can re-core yours, probably for close to the same price as getting one from rad barn or others.

Also if doing the rad, good idea to change all the hoses while it's out, belts too.

Paul
