is there a hook that locks the hood-windshield hooks secure
My 73 never came with hood hooks to hold the windshield down. I was able ot track down the hooks, but that is it and they seem to need something to secure them when not in use. Is there a hook or catch that hold the hooks secure on the hood when not in use?

The first post was a better answer
I don't have those on the top of my hood windshield hooks would sit. But I know what to look for now, thanks. Those look like "extra" parts in your collection.

Oh...Durka Durka Durka.
|
Later style would be easier to mount since yours are not there...09/74 and later...
The later style windshield rest is also the securing point for the windshield hold down hooks when not in use. |

76 and later hoods have the hooks on the windshield rests that bolt to the hood. The earlier hoods have the hook keepers (?) welded to the hood. Maybe you have a later hood on your 73. Using the newer windshield mounts will work if you drill holes to mount them in the right place. If you have a newer hood than you'll need to change your windshield hinges to the newer type for the windshield to fit the mounts.

This is my 74 hood with the hooks. I used a 78 hood and welded the hooks on to make it fit a 74 windshield pads and hooks.

does your hood have the bolt holes where the parts might've been? is it a split hood or one piece? just wondering if someone swapped on an early hardtop hood or 45lv...they didn't have provisions for the w/s to fold down.

I have a split hood on my 79, but newer windshield frame. Should I just drill some of the holders with pads into my hood?

The two lower bolts are where the actual hooks bolt into. After that and closer to the windshield would be the bumper/hook retainers?

OH CRUD! I see how they go. I guess the only thing I can do is get some squared off U-bolts and use those in place of the triangle hood latch or maybe an "O" lag bolt? Damn that is ghetto. Then I still need the bumper for the windshield.
Since I can't see and it looks like they look wleded, or am I not seeing how they are attached to the hood since mine has the 3 bolts you indicated (2 for the hooks an one I guess where the catch went)? Is there any way for someone parting out a jacked up hood to cut out the catches or cut out chunks of a hood and I coulg cut them off and weld them to my hood? __________________ 8/73 FJ40, 4" tweaked front flipped extended wheel base SUA, rear SOA, 35 Cooper STT Discoverers, fully locked, 1.5" Marlin wheel spacers, 60 series power steering, just under 100" wheel base, full cage, 60 series ignition, roof rack and custome awning, Syrius sat. radio, and a whole bunch of electrionic toys to get GPS directions and keep me in touch with other rigs in case something like the movie "Red Dawn" happens. www.centralvalleycrawlers.org Last edited by slickrock; 06-25-08 at 12:11 AM. |

1) find a trashed hood and drill out the hook retainer (they are spot welded in three spots) than bolt them in and replace the hardwear...or.....
2) or find the later set-up in post #11 and be done with it. 3) leave it be...as cool as it looks ....its a PITA to drive off road in the woods with the windshield down...its a PITA to drive on road with the windshield down...i have only driven with mine down 4-5 times in over 17 years. __________________ 1974 FJ40 OEM Soft Top ![]() 2004 Toyota Sienna LE (1) Child boy version (1) Child girl version (1) Child in Production 197 Wife ![]() TLC Literature and Manuals: http://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series...y-lit-etc.html Toyota History: http://forum.ih8mud.com/fj25-owners-...ical-data.html TLC FST Canvas & Maintenance: http://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series...soft-tops.html |

if you have the w/s frame with the wipers on the bottom, you will need to go with the holders/pads since the old rubber bumpers aren't tall enough. also, don't just bolt them where the old stuff is. the newer windshield frames use different hinges that move the frame forward a bit when it goes down, so measure carefully.

The hood hooks are the same as the apron hooks tha hold the hood down so If you can't find a hood maybe a pair of old aprons. __________________ 72, 74 and 78 FJ40s |

This got me thinking...the hooks on my '75 hood never could reach the "latch/catch" on my '74 windshield. I just used 2 bungies down to the running board area anytime I needed the windshield down for wheeling.
Anyone else had an issue with a '75 and newer hood on a 74 and older fj40? |

Anyone have a picture of the stops on a '65 fj40? I took the two rubber stops out of the package and put them in the holes today...then I tried laying down the windshield but had to put it back up because the wipers would have hit the hood.....??? the Rubber cushions I have arent the "stepped" later kind but the flat kind that look like a chocolate twinky.....
