3rd member swap drum to drum 85 fj60 to 67 fj45

Wondering if anybody has attempted this swap. If you have, what mods were needed for it to work(track width and front shock mounts). Or should i find later model fj 45 axle housings.

Hi All:

Guess I'm a bit confused . . . . are you speaking of swapping the entire axle assembly from a 60 Series to a FJ45? Or just the differential ("third member") units??

Regards,

Alan

complete differential housing assembly. front and back. i found a fj 60 in the junk yard, would it be worth swaping the complete diff/housing assembly? Or is there a easier way to upgrade brakes to a better braking system with disc in front? Were looking for reasonably price swap/upgrade. Four wheel drums with 400 hp is dangerous. lol. thx for ur replys

Hi All:

How big/wide of tyres are you planning on running on this rig?

I ask because the 60 Series axle assemblies are wider than the 40/45 axles. This wider stance can help stability. There is the issue of the mounting points for the leaf springs; do a search here on MUD in the 70 Series section for Lowenbrau's BJ74 build-up; he shows how to deal with spring mount clearance issues in his thread.

Regards,

Alan

i just finished swapping an 89 60series front axle into my 66fj45. you have to outboard the hangers 2.75 inches. i bought some rear spring hangers from rough stuff and just reused the shackle hangers in the front. i did a minitruck power steering upgrade at the same time and the pitman arm that mounts to the center arm ended up hitting the shackle hanger on that side, so if you're going that route, take that into consideration. a followed a couple of writeups on here, so i would reccomend searching those out like josie'slc said.
