Exhaust F1.5 to 2F retrofit

When I originally bought my cruiser the PO has installed a "cherry bomb" and and shortened the down-pipe to move the exhaust above the skid-plate. After a year of owning the cruiser, I installed the current 2F due to bad oil pressure. I welded the FJ-60 Exhaust manifold flange to my old booty exhaust line. Now that that line is totally shot, I'm needing to replace it with something better. There is a local shop, but they charged me $130 to bend the short peice from the "cherry bomb" to the right-rear fender behind the wheel.....maybe 30" of pipe, and one 90* bend. My wife has complained about exhaust smell, when traveling slow through the mountain trails, and would like to put a catalytic converter in the exhaust route. So...To my question. Will the exhaust system fro a 79-82 FJ-40, bolt into my '74, with little to no modification? A sales tech, said that there are too many differences in frame design, and body mounts, and wasn't sure. I know custom would probably be the way to go, and I want to keep the stock exhaust manifold. Is there a bolt-in solution out there? Neither $OR, JT, Man-A-Fre, seem to have what I'm looking for.

Thanks, Doug

You need a new muffler shop! A catalytic converter(generic) used to cost about a hundy + installation at my local shop. I had a complete exhaust system with a knock-off Flowmaster muffler done from the downpipe out the back for $150.

Yeah, I know. I live out here in SW Kansas, and everything is expensive. Most people of this community...about 6000 pop., drive 60+ miles to Garden City to buy groceries. With fuel at $3.93 locally, that can get expensive real fast, but even so it more than offsets the price of buying locally from the little store here, that has just staples.

Did you retain the air pump and injection manifold? That might solve the smell problem. The cat, by itself, without the air injection might not work like you want.

Yeah, I kept all the emission equipment from the engine, though I don't think it does much good without the correct controller. I'm recalling from memory, but the '74 emissions controller has like 5 ports. I have a schematic in my manual, of where to plumb stuff in, but I don't think it works anyway. As it is, I have it plumbed as the original F engine was, though the emmisions equipment to it was already stripped when I bought it. This '84 2F has a TON more stuff attached to it, so its stripped right now, to just essential fuel and spark management.

No.

Just install stock 76-78 exhaust, and have a generic cat cut into the front pipe close to the engine. Modern cats are smaller and will fit without having to run the exhaust under and outside the frame (like the stupid 79-80 setup).
