Thanks for your help Jim.

I found 3.100 on Page 87. I kept looking under the suppliment section in the Haynes.

D'animal:I am not seeing a cali exhaust manifold on your truck? Looks like the 1/'75-8/'76 federal spec manifold to me? I would install the federal spec emissions stuff, since its going to be easier...plus the emissions manual clearly lays out what you need. I seriously doubt any smog tech is going to be able to tell the difference.

did you find the egr "J" tube and correct cooler?

I do not have the "Thermal" exhaust manifold. I have only seen one of them in my life that actually was connected to an engine and working.

I did find the correct "J" tube. Thanks for the asssitnace on that. Only two places had them, Marks Off Road in Bubank and Specter Off Road.

I just want this to run great and pass smog. I took the Holley carb off and bought all the stuff from another Mudder who desmogged his 1976 FJ40.

I have a complete 76 Ca engine with ALL the shit still connected....even the thermactor exhaust manifold..... I pulled to do a 4.3 conversion.......problem is it's under a tarp in a full 20'x10'storage bldg at the back, it would take 3 men two hours to get to it.

get a lot of firepower, eliminate anyone associated with the emissions program, and leave the 4 1/4 miles of vacuum hose off. you'll be happier without having to figure it out, your engine will be happier without all that crap on it and the rest of your state will be happier when they don't have to deal with the emissions control monkeys.

seriously, good luck. i think i still have a 78 emissions manual from the nuclearlemon. let me know if you need to borrow it and i'll send it out.

What is that black box on top of the thermostat housing? Is it just a cover for the BSV? I have never seen one before. Don't go looking it up, I was just curious.

Thanks, I like your idea.

I wish they would re-inact the 30 year rule. Vehicles that are older than 30 years do not have to pass smog.

This has really been a challenge since I'm starting with a great running 2F with a Holley Carb on it and stripping it down to install all the emmission stuf.

I have a few boxes of 1976 emmission stuff so I'm starting from ground zero. My boxes of Fed emmission stuff and California Emmission stuff some how were tossed in together. I did it while trying to get more shelf space maybe a year ago.

According to the EPC,
17650-61010 is 7501-7602 Fed.
17650-61020 is 7501-7608 Cali
17650-61040 is 7608-7709 cali

Chris's truck has thermonuclear manifold, cali carb, and the original California emissions compliance sticker underhood. But some things were not hooked up right and it has a '75 Fed control box.

Maybe the truck was in the same situation as Dan, throwing random parts at it to get past cali smog nazis sometime in the past. Fun stuff.

it's a cover, made from the same stuff as the distributor snap on cover, kind of thick rubber, I imagine they got lost or damaged on most trucks....first time I have ever seen one.

I bolted the 6010 on it since it looks like I have the Federal system. If followed the plumbing diagrams and connected the VSV.

I just have a couple of questions.

#1
Does it matter if I connect the VSV line to the upright 3 nipple boss on the intake manifold approximeatly even with the #3 cylinder? Or does it have to be connected the the big nipple coming out of the intake manifold that connects to the PCV valve? My PCV valve to intake manifold connector does not have the "small" nippe on it, only the one for the PCV valve. Post #26 has a great picture of what I don't have.

I will think of the other questions in a little bit.

Why would someone shove a ball bearing up in the vacuum tubing? This was 1" or so up in the tubing.

I think the charcoal canisters go on the passenger side of the engine compartment.

#1 Are these the corrrect ones for a FJ40?

#2 Physically where do they bolt? The one wth the frame around it has a hump like it would bolt to the frame. They other one looks like the same jsut without the frame.

#3 It has wriing.

Those are 78-later canisters w/ the elec vent valve. The canister bolts to the inner fender. One of the pictured canisters has the FJ60 frame mounting bracket.

Howdy! That's one of the easiest ways to block a vacuum like that needs to LOOK like it works. Called De-smog bearings. Usually right next to Muffler Bearings on the MicroFich, but I don't have a current part number for you. Rumor has it that OEM is unobtainium, but I think I have several used ones, $20 each, plus postage. John

The one on the right is pretty close. It bolts to a bracket that bolts to the fender under the heater fan on the passenger's side. The one you have is 9-77 or later. You can just bypass the the output valve (#31). Don't chuck it though. It's $60 used from $OR. Details of this bypass are left to the reader.

I haven't seen an EGR valve with an electrical connector on it. I'm sure the smog tech hasn't either.

BTW: I've got some OEM desmog bearings you can have for $10 for the whole set. Paypal is fine. I think that inkpot dude is trying to rip you off.

Do they come in a round carrying case?

Mine do! They're even packed in muffler grease to keep them quiet. John

Mine do too. Case says "Daisy BB's, Qty 250".

But I lack the muffler grease.

The correct charcoal canister for your vintage is about 2" shorter and slightly smaller dia than the ones pictured. Will have two ports on the top, and one on the bottom.

As for the EGR, I dont recall a temp sensor(the electrical connection) on the egr valve in my 2/'76???

Do you have a white or black emissions sticker under the hood? I seem to recall white with black type was federal, and black with white type was cali.
