I just took a look at your bare tranny and t-case before you primed it and I must say You put some work into the hard to reach spots!!!! Your rear discs went together nice also. I need to order my brackets up so i can mount some calipers..... Oh and wow that rust on the frame was weird!

Great job!!

yea all the credit goes to my dad.. i was getting a little frustrated with the amount of work and he came out and helped me both on Sat and Sun - even showed me some of his cleaning tricks: we used gas, mineral spirits, paint brushes, tooth brushes, screw drivers, wire wheels and that was the end result.

yea that frame was trashed.. i don't think there was any un-oxidized steel left.

also went back out and tried removing the pilot bearing using the homemade puller and i didn't have very much luck.. i think its because i don't have a good size socket - i'm just going to take a trip to the auto parts store and see if they have a puller i can rent for a deposit.

Just checking on progress

some pics here of the oil pan removed with everything installed, no prob on access
http://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series...ch-change.html

I didnt see a water pump on your motor

let me know if you would like a 2 belt pulley for it I have one since I ordered 2 --You can have it
I also have a stainless rear brake line-extra yours if you need it (from the frame to the axle and its longer than stock for my 4 inch lift)

Now see that's a price a student can live with eh?

I have a couple other parts you can have dibs on if you are interested

An extra never used alternator and voltage reg both Reman from SOR. Ordered in Dec, complete with invoice. I have to decide if I will keep the internal or externally regulated one for myself

I have a good used 1f pump will fit a 2f w/o the oil cooler and a california with oil cooler water pump for a 2F--mount holes are slightly different on the calif pump so you need a cali engine I suppose or a different year than my 79?

Thought I'd offer them to you since you seem to be at that stage

There will be some good progress on Betty soon but waiting for parts and time to come together!

Post up here if you are wanting any of the parts and I'll get my email address to ya

Antfj I am not fully up to speed as to where you are at on your build but are you talking about removing the pilot bearing out of the flywheel?? If so and that is what your talking about the socket for I would just buy a tighter fitting cheap socket rather than hunting down a puller. I have never had that trick not work. Sometimes you just have to keep packing it full of grease over and over but it will come!! I use a short extension in the socket because it plugs the end better. Man i hope i am on track here and not in left field as to what your talking about

:-)

pilot bearing

Hey one more thing prefit your new pilot bearing

I have an old shaft I used as a clutch alignment tool --I cut it off an old 3 speed with a cutting wheel

I used some emery cloth on the shaft until the pilot slid on and off easily ---Thanks to Poser for that gem!

I got a rental puller to use as well but I dont think it fit so I just hooked one arm over it and it worked anyway

bsmith - yea i just installed my water pump and actually haven't taken any pictures... i needed bolts for it - all set with the pully and break lines - thanks for the offers your truck is looking good with that top.. almost there!

BUT i don't have an alternator and I would love a rebuilt regulator since I'm not sure if my original works. let me know how much you want for them.

I'm not sure what other pieces i need at the moment except for maybe the metal oil cooler piping that attaches to the valve cover since my DUI inhibits me installing the one that normally goes on the side cover.. but that is extra at this point.

4x4 - that is exactly what I'm talking about.. i'll have to try it again for sure. I really didn't spend too long on it and it was cold outside so i was rushing either way i need to go to the auto store so i'll grab their free rent-a-tool just for the heck of it too.

Hey Ant,

The frame I got from you is in place!! Ordered all the engine/tranny mounts, shackle bolts and bushings. Hope to get the axles stripped and painted this winter. Possible rolling chassis this spring!!

Keep up the fun.

pilot bearing

hey, if the tool doesnt fit cause the arms are too big just put one in and angle the the whole puller to one side and it will work--at least it did for me

I need to update my subscription so I can send you my email address and get your shipping address

For the alt how does 30 percent off the invoice sound? Only been here about a week or two so it has not been sitting around for a long time.

it'd save me the argument about returning elec items
let me know if thats good --- Ill update my sub and get back with you

well got the bearing out.. using the slide hammer and pilot bearing puller from autozone it popped right out after a couple of slams with the hammer. got the clutch installed but cant go any further.. mainly because now i can't get the throwout bearing off of the hub and because I don't have the little clips that hold the fork to the hub but those have been ordered and are on their way.

also picked up what i brought to my local metal finishing company. they did a pretty good job on most things - the problem was that they wern't extremely clean in some cases.. esp with the bolts. He had to send the stuff out to his friend in hartford to be blasted (that cost $75) and then he charged me $250 for all of the plating. I'm not sure if that is reasonable but I sure am happy with all of the stuff I got back!! porn is below...

aside: next time I will blast the parts before i bring them.. that is definitely something i can do myself to get rid of that extra charge

Now that is sweet! Those parts though they were fairly expensive are really going to make the difference on the project. I had a 78 ford short bed f150 that was as straight as a 2008 honda accord with sweet paint but it never really came together because of the little bits and pieces just stood out with the body being so crazy........... Of course they looked great before the paint!!

You are doing a great job especially having limited tools! Kinda wished I had started with a 76-later 40 so that I could do more of a resto mod. With my 71 and all the crap that came with it - drum brakes, 3 speed tranny, 1f, etc., I just tore everything out and am doing a complete drivetrain swap. I bet it's nice putting stuff back in that was meant to be there rather than trying to fab every little thing.....

thanks for the kind words! i can't wait to get back home and make some more progress.

resto mod is the perfect term! that is definitely what has saved me the most headache since i'm learning as i go anyways its easier to know that it just goes back together the way i took it apart

well i'm back. and i don't have to work until nov so its crunch time to get the cruiser done.. bsmith sent me some parts while i was away at school - here is a pic of the alternator i got... i'm a little worried because i don't think the belt is going to be tight enough.. i had to put the pully from my old alt on the new one. thanks again bill!

started taking apart all the steering/linkages - I'm keeping manual steering for now.. just gonna clean up the box and put new oil in it.. rebuilding the centerarm and the drag link as well as replacing the tie rod ends with 555 ends. also the main tie rod i have is bent... and i can't get the old ends out of it.. so i'm just going to suck it up and get the one that man-a-fre sells.

also had to clean up my mess from the winter...

on a side note... whats the trick to getting the drag link apart?? that flat head nut... whats the best way to get that out exactly? i don't really have a huuuuge screwdriver - and its rusted pretty good so i don't think that will work (got it soaking now)

got the hinges

Got the hinges thanks! In the nick of time-the truck showed up today out of the blue to pick it up--had me scrambling to throw parts in it and tie up loose ends! He was supposed to call 48 hrs ahead two weeks from now!

Is that the new antenator on you motor?

Use a cold chisel that will fit the slot. Turn chisel with wrench.

wow. been a while since i updated - got that drag link apart.. cold chisel and a impact gun did the trick! its been raining like crazy the last week or so.. so i've been busy doing things indoors.

-got some stuff painted up
- cleaned both my parts room and my shed like crazy to get ready for when i start to do body work
- restored my knobs and switches
- broke a bolt off while installing the oil pan cause im a tard.. drilled it out with the help of my uncle... it was an off center drill.. used some stripped thread repair shit and seems to have done the trick the bolt went in nice and tight.. we'll see if it leaks :/ put in rotella 20W-40
- installed steering box and center arm casing
- bought a shit ton of parts from SOR - they should be here on tuesday
- installed the transmission and transfercase! the pins on the clutch fork to throwout bearning assembly were a bitch!

this week:
-bring the body and panels to the blaster quoted $1200.. ouch.. but worth it.. they body is in great shape as far as new england steel tubs go but there is a lot of stuff i can't see.. like fiberglass and bondo so i need to know what i'm working with. I don't have the facility to get it primed so i'm gonna have MAACO or someone like that give it a couple coats of primer.
-knuckle rebuilds

and. the pics.

anyone know a good place to get gear oil... i need 4 gallons (i'm pretty sure) for everything (axles, steering box, transmission, transfer case).. does brand matter? or do I need to spend like $150 on a brand name? i still haven't checked with toyota to see what they have to offer
