Original F MPG

I Have a '72 fj 55. Recently rebuilt F motor with electronic ignition, rest is stock. I get 8mpg or less. Is this average?

I have a 55 with an f145 and a 1bbl, maybe 8mpg off-road, but about 14-16mpg on the highway. Motor is also very old and tired.

I get between 10 and 12 on highway. Something isn't right.

I am thinking about the igniton and carb being the problems to this. The carb is orig. and was also rebuilt recently. Talked to the guy that installed the elect. ign. he said the timing was really touchy. He also said that I should go back to points. What do you guys think? Should I get a petronics and ditch my crane ignition or go to points?

Don't really know about the elect. ign. but me thinks your mechanic isn't familiar with it. The advice to go back to points makes me question the guys sanity. I have the petro and it seems to work fine. No points to wear so trouble free like I likes it.

Thanks rsb. I was also thinking about a weber carb to replace stock. I found a thread bout orig carb v. aftermarket. Most people really liked the orig. Do you have a preference?

This summer went on a week long fishing trip with my son on one stretch took exactly 10 imperial gallons (45 litres) to go 135 miles I run 33" swampers and towing a loaded down 16 foot lund aluminum boat , this is pretty accurate because I've gpsd my truck to check my speedometer 50mph is actually 55mph (10% out) so 15 mpg all else stock . I'm looking hard at propane cheaper and runs at all angles. Russell
