ROTW FJBen 67 FJ40

Looks like it's my time for ROTW

after changing a few vehicles I currently have a 67 FJ40. I picked it up in march of last year. It was basically a project rig with some promise but A LOT that needed to be finished. She was my friends that was basically sitting for the last 5 years out in California. He moved out there, so I actually know the rig from when he lived here in Colorado (his wife played in a band with me)

The rig came to me with a rebuilt 350 RV cam, quadrajet, SM420, SOA, saginaw, mini-truck knuckles, power brakes, hy-steer, mazda 626 seats, ARB snorkle, soft-top, half soft doors, hard doors, t-case saver

While it looks very decked out and complete, there was a A LOT of finish work. #1 no 4WD (no front d-shaft) had to do Ramhorns/Y-pipe/new exhaust. Tires were getting tired. No dash, just gauges, radiator shot, carb tuned for California and old, valve seals were dried up causing puffing on an engine that had 3K miles on it!, no rear seat and that was just the beginning.

So I have spent basically the WHOLE summer working on this rig trying to get it into really reliable shape so that eventually I can wheel. This included but not limited to: new u-joints, new radiator, new slave, new master, new lines, re-sized driveshaft, new exhaust, new manifolds, new gaskets, new hoses, all this in just maintenance to get her to spec.

So now I'm a "mod" type of guy so I decided to make some changes to get it going a little better. One of the first "mods" was tires. I put 37x12.50x15 Goodyear MT/R's on American Racing Series 102 rims and balanced with equal powder. They run really smooth and good up to 70ish which is plenty

The next mod I tackled was the "stink" the quadrajet was running a bit rich and the valve seals were shot...the rig was stinky. So TBI was the resolution. I got the full TBI setup from a Caprice Cop car. I pulled the engine, put in new valve seals, painted the engine, and did a general cleanup. The rig runs great and has a chunk more power. It has a bit of a wobbly idle which I believe is my Vehicle Speed sensor being bad. I had to switch to a manual fan as the Taurus fan wouldn't cool the engine and it created a huge power surge in the system everytime it turned on. Starts beautifully in the super cold weather.

Then the power steering box "popped" off the frame. It was the Downey piece and it was made of cast of some sort. I don't think whoever welded that new how to weld cast good, so it was a no win situation. Thankfully it popped off on a curb during a U-turn...so I built my own plate that is super beefy and all is good in the steering world.

The rest is what I STILL have to do...I have all the parts, I just need to install them:
30 Spline Longfields with e-locker spline
Toyota E-locker 3rd
ARB locker
materials for 4-link rear

now for some pics of the current state.

Can you give some detail on the snorkle set up?? It would appear that it feeds your heater intake?? I could see that as an advantage when the weather is hot...
Cheers! (Sweet Rig!)

Hi Ben, Your project looks great! I hope to have your former "child" on the road shortly. Expecting the body back from paint in two weeks. I am going through "diesel withdrawl" so it will be good to have it all together. Happy Holidays...

The Snorkel

It's actually for a Jeep TJ. My friend ordered and ARB bumper for a mini-pickup and somehow that was in the box as well...so merry x-mas to him (this was a few years ago) The Jeep one's mount on the passenger side...the FJ's on the drivers side. So basically it was able to mount right where the air intake is, so no holes in the body. It's also mounted so that you can fold down the windshield and not have to unbolt anything.

It blocks most of the fresh air intake...but this is a 40...there is plenty of fresh air coming from other sources in the rig

with the carb it was directly plumbed into the airbox. With the fuel injection, I need to figure out a better way to tap into the current airbox. It's just for looks at the moment

Oh and the fender lights are gonna stay until I get some cheap turnsignals...anyone donating?
