Searched Quadrajet on ebay and had a lot of "marine" versions come up. I'm curious, what's the difference?

I rebuild Q-jets too. Run them on my K-5 and my Sub. Done a few for the cruiser folks over the years as well.
If you're interested, call me next Thursday. I'll be away from the shop til then.

i just got rid of my jet and added a edelbrock thunder avs off-road carb... i really like it! very easy to tune to your liking. you are able to adjust when the secondaries open with just a torx head and a flat head. mine open super early for a real leap when i get on her haha... also, the bowls are side mounted and the needles and seats are spring loaded to prevent flooding. i havent gotten it up in the hills yet, but come this summer once the SOA is done i'll let you know how it does.
ps. 650cfm, electric choke, $399.99 checkers, or you can get a rebuilt one at 4wheelparts for like 325 or something like that.
pps. part number 1826

I agree. Its pretty solid in the hills and in the rocks too... Only time its even sputtered any was when I had my 40 laying sideways at about 45 degrees in a huge rut and she still got me out.

Isn't Edelbrock making Q-Jets now? Are they any better/worse/different than Rochesters?

Howdy! Usually the Marine versions have nos smog plumbing, and they are setup for running at midrange to WOT. Not very good for low rpm performance. John

best quadrajet?
Hello,
I have a 98 goodwrench 350 crate motor in my 40 and just sick to death of my holley carb flooding out. Based on the posts in this area it seems that a quadra jet would be a good solution. I have started looking at them online. anybody have a specific one they like and a place to buy it? Thanks in advance.

I had a 670 Holley Truck Avenger. Never again. While it performed off road on slopes as advertised, it was just a miserable to drive gas hog with no low end off idle torque. And you cannot jet it down enough to get any kind of economy out of it. By the time it starts getting into that parameter, it starts backfiring through the carb. Because much of the time the secondaries don't get used, the secondary fuel boil would evaporate empty because the needle tip would fuse itself shut to the seat. You can imagine the bog this caused. I spent the better part of a year trying to make it work, and then threw in the towel and went QuadraJet.
The QuadraJet is, in my opinion, the best 4-bbl there is for a SBC in a Land Cruiser. It idles well. It has excellent off idle performance, and excellent low end torque and response. My 350 will now lug down almost as good as a straight six. Economy is good. I picked up about three mpg over the Truck Avenger. The secondaries do not have hot fuel nor starve for fuel, as the fuel bowl is common with the primaries. While the carb is not a simple to work on as a Holley, and lacks support parts, if you get one sized properly for your application, you should not need to do much more than set the idle mixture, the idle speed, and the choke.
I have not run an Edelbrock on my Land cruiser, but I have one on my pickup. Also had a 670 Truck Avenger on it's engine, a Chevy 454. Miserable fuel mileage. And the throttle response was mushy. Put on the Edelbrock, and the throttle response is crisp and the low end is more streetable. Edelbrock makes these in an offroad version. I think the Quadrjet is superior, but this would be my next choice for a 4-bbl.
If you do want to run a Holley, take a real hard look at your maximum rpm, and your cruising rpm. I doubt many FJ40 owners get over 4000 rpm. I know I don't, and cruise is 3200 at best. Thus, the 470 cfm Truck Avenger is probably a much better choice than the 670 Truck Avenger. Another alternative it so take a mild non-smog 600 and put the offroad spring loaded needle and seats in it.
One carb that's highly spoken of, but you rarely see on a Chevy, is the Autolite 2-bbl. These carbs are dirt simple. And they work well unmodified, even at steep angles. I was going to go this route but came across a decent Quadrajet first.
Oh, and my 350 is stock with an Edelbrock Performer manifold, small tube block hugger heaqders, and single exhaust.

After you get 1,000 votes for the Qjet (for very good reason), also consider converting over to TBI for better drivability in off road terrain, and better milage!!!

i currently run a q-jet and think that it is the best carb you could run on a offroad 40.
i also just ran into a free tbi setup , still deciding if i want to install it . i just love the sound of a carbed v8 , i think i will miss the idle and good roar from the secondary's .
then again maybe i won't .
personally i think q-jet or mpi . if i landed free mpi instead of tbi i would be jumping on it , for now the tbi will sit in a box till i can decide .

Q-jet all the way. As far as what to look for when buying a core to rebuild, try to find one that is early 70's per smog. Good luck

I have the Holley Truck Avenger...I may try to find a Q-jet, the holley drops off at hard throttle pretty bad. That being said, if I can find a TBI setup on the cheap, I will grab it for sure. Funds are going to the buggy, so it has to be a good deal.

Check back to my posts #12, 19, 22. Carter/Edlebrook 1400? series is cheap, simple, and a good performer. Available with or w/o smog and electric chokes in 500/600 maybe fore cfm. I can drag my wagon around the trails running below 500 rpm. Who needs an inline 6 to do that? John

For cheap, you can go to 1 of the auto parts chains and pick up a Q jet for around $150 bucks w/a core.
A stk TBI will have a limited topend and will not give you a kick in the pants like a 4bbl.
