What's this bolt do?
I am in the process of tearing down my cruiser for new paint and rhino lining. In the process, I am trying to identify all the holes on the interior that need to be masked so I don't get rhino lining sprayed in the holes/threads. I found this bolt, looks like a stand off of some sort....don't know its function. Thought somebody out there could help me understand what this bolt is supposed to be used for....More out of curiosity than anything.

Holds the post for the hard top so the hardtop can't blow off.

This wouild be in addition to the 14-or so bolts through the tub rail that secure it already? Or are you saying the bolt in question is used as a temporary securing mechanism used for people who remove the top and reinstall it on a frequent basis?

as coolerman said it is for holding the door post bar...the oem soft top uses the same bolt to hold the door post bow...no windshild to help hold then.
toyota + engineers = overkill

If your 40 has top mount wipers you can secure the top 4 bolts on the front and crank the post screww and call it done. Done so for awhile without incident.
How happy were you this past Saturday?

Thanks guys. I appreciate the help. I will mask that one off. and now that I know what it is for, I will plan on using it.....
Overkill is what has made these things as tough as they are. I love it.

I bed-lined mine and I love it. As for that bolt, my 74 has a spot for one but I don't ever recall having one installed there mine was a factory soft top which now has a hard top. I can't believe the engineers thought it would/could come out. It took three men and a small boy to get mine removed last time. I have now shortened the post to about 8 inches to help next time.

Never even noticed the holes!! Just went out and put a couple of bolts in them. Can't hurt? Is this just a tension bolt against the post or is the post drilled to catch the bolt? Can't tell without taking the top off and I'm not gonna do that just to find out right now.
Also, anybody know what the holes directly above the sill are for?

Hmm...I've had my 40 for >15yrs and never knew there were even holes there.
Course, I made it a moot point when I cut the posts down to ~2in several years ago. Makes it so much easier to get the top on and off.
