I guess it all depends on if you're a flipper or a hoarder...

I just had to make the same choice on my 7/69. I too am a purist, and chose to rebuild the F to keep it original. I did however have to give up on my total OEM rebuild since many of the parts are no longer available from Toyota. Good luck- your truck is awesome.

Ok guys, here's my take. First, weve sold enough V8 kits already to make every Landcruiser in the country a Chevota. Anyone contemplating a V8 swap certainly would not be the first guy in line at this point. Yes, I would want to take something as beautiful as this rig and put in a late model LS-1 muscle engine. Secondly, since you can no longer get everything it takes to do a pristine show room floor restoration (as Mark Algazy almost did), I wouldn't attempt it. Every guy who ever restored a Model A Ford is not happy with it because he personally knows about all the non-Ford (i.e. Tiwan) parts it took to restore the vehicle (including patch panels, etc.)

Your reply does not match his question. Unless you think "D" means buy my V-8 kit because you the only one who hasn't - And I am not being a smartass , but if it was me, keep it original, that rig is too clean to drop anything other than a Toyota powereplant in it.

If you could find an f close by swap it in. If not go with a 2f. I don't think a later 2f would hurt it all that much.

Swap in known good F or 2F. Keep the original engine and possibly rebuild at a later date. Done deal.

You have to figure out what you will use it for and if you will be happy with it. A 1f engine would fit nicely since it is pretty close to original. You should not have any trouble finding a donor for it. You can always find another fj40 that you can actually upgrade to today's standards and make it more enjoyable to drive. For example I perfer to have ps and stuff like that. But if you did that it would not be original anymore .

Keep it original- either option A or B. A being the one of choice. Modifications are for the already abused ones. Once you start modifying original it does not stop... something like a cancer or rust . First its a 2f then PS, disc brakes, 4" suspension, swampers, custom bumper, lockers, and .......you name it!
Hmmm. Maybe it would be a SOA, full roll cage, sliders, and FF axle?
Keeping it original is cheaper by far.

C. Replace the 1F with squeaky clean rebuilt 2F from MAF?
D. Other?
What would you do if you had a $3k budget? I’ll pull and install the engine no matter what route I choose. I have a pile of stuff on my plate right now and don’t really feel like piddlin’ around and doing a DIY job of rebuilding so I’ll farm out the rebuilding work of option “A” above.
I’m a “purist” or hover around “purist” status. I’d like to retain that snapshot in time look of the ’68. However I do have realist tendencies and acknowledge the plusses by dropping in a 2F. After all it was the lack-o-lube of the F that started this all in the first place imo.
I plan on keeping the 40 for a while. If I do sell it, would the fact that the engine was replaced with a 2F matter for a collector? This won’t be a trail rig for a long time…
Thank you all in advance for your pearls of wisdom. Here's a pic of my junk to refresh memories.

Do I need to come down there and slap you back into reality?
Keep it original or sell it to someone who will.

Treasure
"Here's a pic of my junk to refresh memories."
One mans "junk" is another mans treasure! A very nice piece of machinery. If your budget is a driving force then A or B. If you ever decide to sell it years down the road, I think the person who buys it will be forking out some big bucks. It's very obvious that it is well cared for on the outside, and too big of a change with the engine would be a big disappointment. Keep it original....

I suggest you drop in the motor of choice and keep the old one in a crate in your shed. Then, if you sell the truck, you can haul out the crate and say here's the original motor, complete with the original thrown rod and it goes with the truck.

Some day f engines will be hard to find. Everyone who has them wants to get rid of them. might as well get one while the pickings are good.

Replace with rebuilt/new F
Think you already have the information on an F motor rebult by Peter Merriam here in atlanta, ga. When he rebulds it is done right, all toyota parts, painted etc. The engines look and act like they are brand new, imo the kind you want for the truck you have. I can get pics for you if you like.

Good looking truck.
I am a big fan of the 2F, The oiling system is much better.
I like the install a 2F, bag the 1F idea. How deep is your wallet?
But in this case I would have to agree to keep it as stock as possable.
Might want to consider this guy for the rebuild:
http://doaracingengines.com/
He does great work, stands behind it.
Not quite sure what happened but I had 5 posts of the same message above???

Well after much ado, and counting the votes... "B" A nice fresh engine. Still fiddlin with timing and the fuel. Vacuum a little low. Took it or a ride. Strong like bull. Call it good for another 40 years.
MAny thanks kkt for the tip! Peter was great.

I'm happy to see you've got her back on the road, she looks tip top in the picture above.

Looks like you dont need any more decisions but this one by far is hilarious. what a load of crap trying to tell you to put a v8 in it because you cant restore a 40 anymore... thats outrageous... and nice try to sell your product lmao!
