PTO Winch for 3sp or 4sp

Will a PTO for a 3 speed fit on a 4 speed and vise versa? Is there any special modifications required?

I have a F1/3sp (40 71) now and I am going to install a F2/4sp (40 75) I also have, in the future. I need to know if they are compatable?

I am very new at this and checked the FAQ...negative results.

Thank you for you help.

Yes, but the PTO gear inside the transfer case has a different number of splines, so it is case specific.

You are correct...

The 55 series uses a different pillow block than the 40 series as well...

Thank you the quick responses. How would I find out if this PTO I am about to buy will be compatable? Is it something where I can pull the cover plate off the 71 and 75 (both 40s) and count teeth?

The PTO gear teeth are the same; the question is whether the 4sp transfer case has the PTO gear inside or not. If not, you need to buy a 4sp PTO gear and install it. A 3sp transfer case gear won't work in a 4sp.

Pin Head, Thank you for the info!

I am not a great mechanic but trying to learn. So what I think I am hearing is a PTO is a PTO, regardless if it came off a 3 sp or 4 sp. What I need to check is whether or not the 4sp transfer case has the PTO gear inside. Does a 3 sp always come with a PTO gear?

Where can I find a PTO gear to buy?

Yep, for a given vintage, a PTO is a PTO. Didn't matter if it came on a three speed or a four speed. All 3 speed T/Cs had the PTO gear. The 4 speeds only had it if they also had a PTO.

SOR and other vendors have the gear.
