| 302 intake questions howdy all any help on this would be greatly appreciated.I recently replaced a 74 302 with a 76 302 out of a mustang II. I put my original intake on the new motor intake was a 85 cobra intake aluminum 4 barrel set up. the motor doesnt seem quite right running wise. its missing and was making some unusual noises. a whoop whoop noise coming from valve train sound like from number three intake/ exhaust valves.upon closer inspection of new motors original intake (two barrel) i noticed that the rear two waterjackets are not there! Well... on my original 4 bbl. intake , they are there. my question is, could this be screwing up the new motor?to make the four bbl. application work , do i need to change the heads , or should i use the two bbl. intake and motorcraft 2100 carb. and if i do change the heads, are the 74 & 76 blocks the same to accept the water coming from the intake and heads? thanks in advance and of course |

| Not a lot of Ford guys on here. I've got a 289 from a '66 Mustang in my FJ40, and have only run across a handful of "Fordotas." You may be better off posting this question on a Ford or Mustang forum.
OTOH, I've been surprised at the breadth of knowledge of Mud members many times - you may get the answer you need.

| Those blocks were dimensionally identical. No real changes happened to the 302 blocks until the 5.0 roller motor came out.
I would be VERY suprised if blocked coolant passages are causing this problem.
You do a compression check yet?

| Actually the water passage being blocked off will give you just a bit more horsepower due to your intake temp being a bit lower, they even make block off plates for those water passages that go between the intake and the head, it wouldnt cause problems.. if it could cause anything it would be a very rare case of manifold icing up.. but nothing more than that.. your water actually flows though your block, then your heads, then the intake, then out the motor..
When you see Detroit iron running things like Hilborn injection, the water outlet that was on the intake gets moved to the front of the heads (both left and right).. it causes no problems with those motors.. you have something more going on..
Try giving us some more info.. when is it worst? how long has it been going on? all the usual info..

| Vacuum leak? Do either of your exhaust manifold/headers glow red? If so you may have an intake manifold leak. Is the Whoop you discribe constant? Can you hear air escape when you crank the motor by hand? |

| Sorry for the picture quality.
Edelbrock performer setup with a four barrel. Seems to run fine for now.
I could take some better pictures if you like.
Come to think of it, mine made that simular sound after reinstalling it. I had it out, drained and upside down. I think the noice was from the lifters not having any oil. Noise went away after about 15 minutes.

| Hey renoron what headers are you running on your motor? How about some specs on your motor trans etc. I'm in the process of droping a 5.0 HO from a 92 stang in my 71 40. |

Sorry for the delay. I recently had to remove them, painted up, and sealed up some leaks. They don't have any markings of any sort on them. My best guess is that they are Summit's. Ultra thin metal. Had to reweld the collectors, as they were leaking. They do however fit nice.
I will take some better photos tomorrow for you, if you like.
Engine is an early Bronco block/head. Trans is a C4 mated to toyota transfer using an adaptor/spacer. Shifter is cable to a Hurst mounting.

| Mace, 71 40 is getting a 5.0 HO with an NP435 to a 3 speed t-case. Cammy fabbed a mount for the clutch slave and need headers that drop between the motor mount and the slave. Not going SOA any time soon. |
